Twitter is testing News Tab for mobile apps

In a bid to increase user engagement on its platform, Twitter is experimenting a new feature that will highlight top news on its mobile apps, as per a latest report from BuzzFeed.

Twitter News tab

The News Tab that will offer trending news will be present at the bottom of Twitter apps for iOS and Android. Tapping on it will show you a story screen with an image, text and a list of associated tweets. It provides a list of headlines from Twitter-approved publishers, designed to help people get the news of the day quickly and easily. Currently, the news tab is being tested only on small number of users in the US and Japan and is not known if it will expand to users across globe or become a permanent feature of Twitter’s app.

Earlier in June, Twitter showed off its Project Lightning Feature that allows users to keep a tab on current events in real time. There has been an increasing trend of News curation as Facebook launched Instant Articles and Apple rolled out News app for iOS 9. Twitter which has more than 302 million users is struggling to increase its users base and is therefore focusing on news and events to attract new users.
