Google Hangouts joins the elite club of apps that has crossed 1 Billion downloads on the Play Store. Till today, there have been ten apps that have crossed the milestone out of which 3 of them were Facebook apps while the other 7 were Google’s own apps.

It is a bit surprising to see that Google’s own messaging app managed to reach the milestone only after Whatsapp and Messenger apps from Facebook crossed the 1 Billion mark. In fact, if you remember well, the Facebook Messenger app only crossed the milestone earlier this month.

The app has crossed 1 Billion installations which doesn’t necessarily mean that it has over a billion users. It just means that users have installed the application on a billion different devices once. The number of updates and re-installations don’t count. However old devices that are no longer functional do still count. Google Hangouts is expected to be updated to v4.0 in the near future and will bring about updates for Android Wear as well. Google Street View and Chrome are two apps that are next in line to cross the 1 billion milestone and we will be sure to let you know as and when they do.
