Apple scores partial court win against Samsung patent case

Apple has scored a partial victory against Samsung patent case by the US court. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has partially reversed the $930M verdict Apple won against Samsung in the long-running iPhone patent case, as per Reuters.

Samsung did violate several patents but did not dilute iPhone design elements that could not be protected under trademark law, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said. The decision gives Apple an advantage in any negotiations with Samsung. The two smartphone makers have ended their global patent battles except for one or two cases.

Apple was originally awarded around $930 million for this case, but now around $382 million of that total may be removed as part of this trade dress decision. As part of today’s decision, the original San Jose court that awarded Apple the $930 million must review the trade dress portion of the case.
