Google Cast for audio lets you push audio from mobile device to speakers

Google today introduced Google Cast for audio. The audio streaming service enables users to wirelessly control and send the music playing on your iOS, Android device or Chrome browser right to new Google Cast-enabled audio speakers.

The Google Cast for audio can stream music or audio from a selection of apps including Rdio, Pandora, NPR One, Google Play Music, and others to Google Cast-ready speakers, sound bars, and receivers. The service will work similar to Google’s Chromecast streaming stick and users will have to simply tap the “cast” button in an app on Android, iOS, or the web, and select a Google Cast-supported device.

As for hardware, Google said the first speakers to support Google Cast for audio will be available from LG, HEOS by Denon, Sony and others this spring in the US. Google’s current service looks like a take on Apple’s Airplay which also enables streaming of audio to AirPlay-enabled speakers. In addition to speakers, Google says it also plans to soon embed the same kind of streaming functionality in game consoles, set-top boxes with Android TV and televisions.

Google has also teamed up with chip maker MediaTek’s whose System on Chip (SoC), MT8507, will power a seamless home audio experience that allows consumers to easily connect with Google Cast Ready speakers and sound bars from their personal devices, such as iPhones, iPads, Android smartphones and tablets, Macbooks, and Windows PCs using Google Cast Ready apps.
