Apple iPhone 3GS vs Nokia N900

on August 28, 2009 – 3:14 pm180 Comments

Looks like Nokia is taking on Apple with the N900. The spec sheet of N900 looks more beefy than iPhone 3GS for sure. Lets compare the two monsters just based on the specs.

iphone3gs-vs-nokia-n900

iPhone 3GS Nokia N900 Winner

WCDMA 900/1700/2100 MHz

AT&T or T-Mobile ?
GPS Assisted-GPS with Digital Compass Assisted-GPS receiver if N900 carries N97′s legacy GPS then , iPhone’s Digital Compass is a winer

Looks like iPhone 3GS is going to have a tough time competing against the N900. and looking at the 3G Frequencies , It’s most likely that T-Mobile gets the N900 and AT&T wont.  Also the N900 will be available only in select markets – Europe, Middle East, North America.

iPhone 3GS or N900 ? Vote now !

That’s one of the most biased piece of comparison i have seen / read. One heck of a desperate attempt to prove Nokia is better!

What about the touch screen which is resistive? What about the software – hardware integration? What about all the Apps in the apps store? Its too early to compare.. so shut the F up

  • Krita

Ashok! Don’t behave like a whiny desperate fanboy. Your diatribe makes you look like a joker. Use the stuff then decide wheihc one is better instead of presuming things. Have you used N900 yet or even an iphone?

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

    Ashok ,

How can you its biased when its based on the specs ? Clearly Nokia’s hardware is improving and N900 and iPhone 3GS use the same CPU.

Yes, regarding the Touchscreen, iPhone seems better but Nokia’s touch performance has been linked to S60 5th edition’s flaws. Maemo is expected to be much better even on a resistive screen.

Apps – I din pick a winner (Tie – till we see Maemo apps)

I’m a huge fan of the App Store and would have spent more than $100 so far on app personally. But one thing which I HATE about iPhone is the lack of multitasking which Maemo seems to address directly.

I know its too early to compare, but since the hardware and price points are similar , I could not abstain from posting. But its up to you to pick a winner ?

  • I4U

What a delicious sensation to give the address of an app depot and to download any application which don’t have to be validated by any company! Unvaluable… for private, but also for corporation.
    Bye bye Apple…

  • Stoma

don’t forget bluetooth, def. a win for N900. The iphone bluetooth is terrible.

  • Manish

According to me, there are points that if Nokia N900 managed to score then iPhone will be history.

    1. Price (Value for money)
    2. Performance (There is nothing great seeing a potential device works its best)
    3. Battery Life (Having so many online features, this device Need to have a good batter life to hold on for full day atleast.
    4. Touch response (thats the only reason iphone is still an iphone .. lets hope N900 will be atleast competing)

Apart from these, as usual, N900 gives more feature (daily use) that can easily beat iphone, like file/pic sharing over bluetooth, attachments in email, and above all, the Multitasking.

Waiting for Authentic Review of Nokia N900 as soon as it reaches to Nokia World or to Public itself.

  • Trun

@Varun — I am shocked to see such filthy language being used by Ashok. How on earth did you publish his post? Anyway, full marks for a fantastic response. Very professional and Tactful :)

    @Krita — Ditto! Well said.

  • matt

one of my favorite unmentioned feature is the FM Transmitter. No need to buy additional products to connect to radios or your car or whatever…

    what about full flash support?
    what about USB charging?
    what about removable battery?
    what about hot-swappable memory?
what about video playback file formats: .mp4, .avi, .wmv, .3gp.?
    what about TV out?
    what about Dual LED flash?
what about Bluetooth v2.1 including support for stereo headsets?
what about built in SIP support? (this allows for t-mobiles hot-spot at home)

Not that I am excited at all…

  • Ashok

Krita, Thats exactly what am saying.. Has Varun, who is a good friend by the way, used the N900? So how can he compare?

I have never been a huge iPhone fan, myself.. But the iPhone 3gs is a complete device all the way. It has a great UI and a great touch screen not to mention the apps. Multitasking is the only downside.

Manish, Price will be similar.. Performance-wise will continue to rule for atleast an year more (and then 4G will be out).. Battery yeah iPhone sucks.. Touch, just forget it.. N900 can’t come close.. Resistive has its advantages, still sucks..

Trun, we are friends man.. Language is way filtier on phone ;)

  • rhetoric.assassin

The fact of the matter, is you wont much of this phone making a difference in the smart phone market.

There is nothing this phone has that would want me to ditch an iphone. Oh, multitasking, something the next iphone announced next summer will have.

And its about implementation. We will see how the UI and functionality is on the N900. But it will be,… what another 5 years before Nokia upgrades this phone version. While Apple will every year just make more improvements that their competitors will just be chasing.

I think its naive to think this phone without any apps in the store, tested in hand, with only mockups (lol) saying this is a win against apple.

Its funny how apple has the target on its back since the inception of the ipod.

A Phantom comparison that is expected to be taken serious. You guys reminds me of kids waving the pricks in the air and never even touched a woman. Give it a rest.
I actually like meamo and own an N810 to play around with. My true and tested device will for now be the iPhone 3GS. I would not have said the same a year ago but I GREW UP. iPhone presents a platform that easy to use and generates cash for developers and tremendous value for its users. It took 3 years for apple to muscle up this device while Nokia sang praises to S60. They failed to realize that you don’t just cram nice hardware together and expect miracles. You need serviecs, you need to play better with carriers especially here in the US, stop the ridiculous pricing ($799 for a netbook!!!!)and most of all you need a direction. The name Nokia does not mean what it used to be folks and unless you stop kissing their ass, they’ll never come up with innovative products like this new device. This tablet seems a step in the right direction but lightyears behind the BULL that is now the iPhone. Let the hate pour!
    @canadu

  • Satya

    Hey,
This is a Jhakkkaas Phone(Nice Ph). It is really going to break the back of Iphone but to reach among widest range Nokia will have to be more concerned over the price. Wish to have one if it comes arond the price tag of 25 to 28K.
    It will ***K Apple.

  • Satya

Really Nice…Uuummmahhh…Love it and to be its owner

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

    @rhetoric.assassin

    Good points

I din call it a win . Looks u you just voted for the iPhone

    @Charles

Appreciate your comment even though you call it a POS article.

Nokia is for sure playing the catch up game. Hardware was below par in the past . But now both the N900 and 3GS carry the same CPU and same 3D Graphics engine.

We have so many apps on the App Store not due to Apple but due to the developer community and due to the VC Cash tat backs these developers.

Linux has a much larger developer community and in the long run Maemo apps MIGHT match the Apple App Store . But for now App store is a winner.

  • Trun

@Ashok – Peace! I didn’t know you guys were friends.

@Charles — I like the iPhone, i really do. I have used all three versions till now. It was light years ahead of the competition when it was launched but that too only because of its OS and Touchscreen interface. Curiously, Apple decided not to include features at that point which most other smartphones would have as standard. I think things are more even these days from some great devices from HTC, Samsung, Nokia and even LG (a million Arena’s sold). While the iPhone is still a fantastic device, i don’t think it is “light years” ahead of the competition any longer. I still long for a device which not only has a great touchscreen OS but also overall other features and services. Something that stands out as an undisputed king among smart phones (or should i say mobile computers) I am ready to shell out the bucks. Is it going to be N900 – I don’t know? But I sure will be glad if it is.

  • rep

Comparing and saying iPhone video recording is similar to N900 is a total JOKE!! Nokia 5MP camera with flash is always the BEST cam recorder and the picture is almost perfect clear. iPHONE?? Only 3.0MP…not even a tie..it’s not even close!! Where do you get the idea it’s a tied?? Based on 800×480?? LOL

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

    @rep

I have not seen the video samples of the N900.

Camera i have seen both N900 and 3GS samples , N900 wins . 3GS does record really good video and N900 should beat it

Just wait for a 4 more days :-)

  • http://twitter.com/canadu Charles

@Varum my apologize for calling our article a POS. You gotta understnand that I have a greater love for Nokia than it seems. I spent 5 years there as an employee including moving on and over to NSN. In the glory days of Nokia there were no competition then fast foward to now and their answer in mid 09 was the horrible N97 which was a solution to an even pitifull N96. Before anyone can complain, I own those two devices. If we stop kissing Nokia’s ass they will catch the fire once again release prodocts worthy of those 5 letters. I paid 299 for the iPhone 3GS….if a worthy device comes out, I can still pay ATT 200 cancellation fee and still come in under the price of an N97

@Trun….I’m a trekkie, lol. Like I said, I still own my meamo cause I recognize it as a truly nice mobile platform. Symbian reminds me of windows 98. I might consider the N900 only if it can satisfy 2 things….strong developer support(I hate the current meamo style of app hide and seek repository)and price baby.

  • km

    @Varun Krish – Nice comparison

4 more days for you to hit it… Great :)

Well, my Vote goes to N900 …

I am not a Nokia fan boy. I Have used the iPhone and its true that the touch exp couldn’t match with any device as of now but still have to wait for this one to experience it…

I believe the chances of this beast being launched in India(very soon or not at all) are rare…y

    1. Only 1 tablet landed in India i.e. 7710 (as far as I know, please correct me if I am wrong), I know this is the N-series but still.

2.That tablet also didn’t do too well, when it was here, Nokia did created a lot of buzz through graphical advertisements but nothing came up strongly.

    3. N97 is a flagship device right now, if Nokia launches N900 right after it, it would be killing its own device, It might happen in 1st or 2nd Quarter of 2010 but this year seems difficult. I might be wrong at the perception but still I believe it wouldn’t happen soon.

The bottom line is that I personally would be desperately waiting for this beast to hit India this October b’coz I am tired waiting for iPhone 3GS and I am planning to buy N97 soon…

Nokia I need it pullllezzzzzzzzzzzzzz :)

When Apple iphone 3GS will launch in india and what will be its pricing.?

  • Raw

atleast this one looks as good as apple products going by their website

maemo is an interesting move – will hv to see whether opensource can change the shape of this evolving market

so is it more pc than phone? or viceversa?

  • TJ

The most important part is the fact that this is just the starting,,nokia will be bringing much more of these phones in future with hopefully more improved hardware(not that arm a8 is slow),,,after Samsung i8910 and iphone 3g s this is the third best device of 09
But just like iphone is very highly priced thist one should be appropriately placed

  • majka

Just so you know if you jailbreak your iphone (which most people should) then you can have multitasking just as easily as on the Nokia (i assume as nokia’s i don’t know about yet), the program is called backgrounder and is free…I want this phone more then I want a Russion Teen Hooker….which says alot

  • RobertH

i read this specs comparison and it made me laugh. The author
simply compared specs and people responded as though it was
a full review. On no occasion did the author choose a winner between
    the two devices yet……
I think the comparison is fair. Spec for spec. And what the author wasnt
sure about he commented sensibly with tie until or til we investigate. Which
to me is fair enough. To some of the comments here…
The iphone is way ahead of its time…how is that possible? It wasnt the first
touch screen and it lacked basic functions which other devices were capable of
4-5years ago. What the iphone did do was made people aware of what can be done
with a mobile device….which was already being done…i take nothing away from apples
    marketing….superb
the app store…people go on about the app store yet i personally dont see what the big
deal is…loads of apps yes…but only a handful of productive apps (cmon a fart app?)
my next point is the proceedure of having apps entered into the app store…apple is
    way too domineering in this…
Resistive screen…i love cold winter nights watching blue fingered iphone users….while my
gloves are on as i operate my resistive screen…plus if nokia can in some way improve on the
n97′s kinetic resistive screen onto the n900…it may well respond like a capacitive screen….
On paper the n900 seems to be the device….we all just wait patiently to see it in its full operation.
Should nokia get the eye candy factor right…..it may well be over for the current iphone….

  • nimish

    Dear All,

As said in the World no human being is perfect similarly no phone can be perfect and satisfy 100%. We are talking about new generation phones with WIFI, touch screen and all. The research is being carried out in Japan on think touch screen in which a user think about the application and it starts. The brain transmits magnetic waves which is captured by machines and translate into action. This phone has tremendous capabilities to process the speed may be more than 1GB RAM.
N900 is launching the phone in Oct 2009. It is a good strategy to address the niche market by nokia as till now nokia is master in mass market segment.

  • raja

Just wait for 2nd Sept,,for nokia meet for further announcement
But till now no doubt this is the first serious threat to the Best touchscreen phone of the past 3 years ie iphone

Hey, I am a long time user of Nokia and Maemo, first on the N770, then the much improved N810..
My wife has a iPhone 3GS and loves it, I must say, for an “end user” the iPhone rocks, but for someone more towards geekdom…the N900 is going to RULE!
There is room for both, but pretty sure you will see the split at geek(nokia) vs non-geek(iPhone).

  • Dr.Mario

About the OS, and apps, the n900 will be way ahead. Maemo is open source, and remains somewhat compatible with native linux apps and deb packages, making porting very easy, here are some that are already available, http://maemo.org/downloads/OS2008/ don’t forget, apps such as google voice won’t be rejected, developers don’t need to pay to share their apps, and you have much more freedom so NO JAILBREAKING REQUIRED!

  • rAg

    @Varun Krish (author)

even after seeing the new age developments in mobile industry its sad that u still want to compare to smartphones based on hardware alone!! dont u think its too old for such comparisons??

Since the launch of iphone people have been struggling to catch up with a similar interface and hardware and after so many years Palm pre has been the closet to provide such experience… but hardware wise there have been many phones which can beat iphone to dirt..

but then again OSX mobile is far more robust and superior and can take on any mobile OS as of now (not at enterprise level tho, blackberry OS still rocks with security)..

Its obvious that the race is going on with a proper combination of OS and hardware, which will clearly show u a winner.. iphone can beat an phone with its OS and hardware combination.. its been proved many times and its still a winner in the market..

OS alone cant do anything with crappy hardware.. hardware alone cant do anything with a crappy OS.. and even if both these factors are good the phone still is loosing at developer base and apps as in the case of Palm Pre..

so next time when u compare two phones please wait for launch and then test it and then compare it.. i surely appreciate your effort here but it should be balanced review.. comparing “on the paper specs” isnt a wise way in todays tech world..

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

I agree with you for the most part, but a few things.

iPhone interface is awesome but making calls is not easy . It may be the new experience but it just lacks in some areas which even a old brick phone can do. I love the iPhone , but the battery life is pathetic and I carry a Nokia if I carry the iPhone :-)

Palm Pre has got an awesome OS but there numerous reports of hardware problems.

As you say a phone is complete only with a decent OS and hardware.

That being said , this was based on my interactions with the 3GS and a Proto N900.

Just watch this space with a detailed comparison. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed

  • rAg

    @varun

i just hope so dude.. its been ages since i enjoyed a nokia phone.. i would definitely like to use one soon :)

my last nokia device was an N80 and also the n800 internet tablet…

  • hrishikesh

frankly speaking, nokia is centuries ahead of apple in marketing strategies.
they launched the 5800xm quitely but now today its the most selling touchphone in india. the reason is- VALUE FOR MONEY.
both iphone and N 900 are going to be priced at a similar rate. the difference isU GET MUCH MORE OUT OF A NOKIA THAN AN APPLE.
look at the specs. the only one thing apple can brag about is touchscreen which is very fluid. ACCEPTED. THEN WHAT?
are u just going to touch the screen amd play?
look at the 5MP Camera, 1GB APP MEMORY, massive 32 expandable to 48GB capacity, QWERTY KEYBOARD which is anutime better than any onscreen keyboard..the list goes on. MORE IMPORTANTLY, THESE ALL THINGS I LISTED ARE THE CORE OF THE HANDSET.(apple will charge more than 50k if they happen to launch a handset with these specs.

and dont forget the touchscreen interface and its response depends a lot on virtual memeory which is responsible for lags while using. i personally own an iphone 3g and its been slow after installing OS 3.0
the n900 wont lag. moreover the touchscreen interface on n900 is very close to iphone(not as good as) according to the twitter account of the source who leaked out the pics of the phone.

and the last and most important, ITS A NOKIA. MOST TRUSTED BRAND IN INDIA. no surprise iphone 3g s will go hands down to the n900.

  • Hawke

It’s not bias comparison. It’s a fact, get it? N900 is way headed compare to iPhone 3Gs. I personally own iPhone 3Gs as well. Compare the spec between both phone, N900 beat hell out of iPhone. But comparing the application, iPhone wins hands down. But how long does app store need to be success? I guess we should give MAEMO a time to compete with iPhone base on app store.

  • mandem

look, os-wise the maemo will smash the iphone’s os and also what about expandable memory , the iphone has no support for extra memory. just imagine watching a movieon that big screen or using a snes/n64/ps1 emulator on the n900. i sure bet the iphone has no capability of running such apps , hence the n900 is by far better…

  • http://rexzilla.livejournal.com/138675.html Rex

I first heard about the N900 a couple of days ago- and got a taste of what fanboydom must be for iPhone users.
It’s inevitable that the comparison with iPhone would begin- but after looking at the specs and features, I’d say the 2 phones are no where even remotely in the same league.

Before I start- one thing about multitasking- Nokia’s S60 OS has had preemptive multitasking since its debut in 2002. The current iteration, 3rd edition FP2 (non touchscreen) is rock solid stable and I can load up multiple apps in the background, switch between them etc without complaint on my N82. And no- there’s no way to ‘hack’ multitasking on the iPhone unless you rewrite the OS yourself. It only supports notifications from apps, which is not the same thing as having invisible process threads in the background for email/chat/rss feed update/what have you. It’s upto Apple, if and when they officially introduce it.

Coming back to the topic- the difference between N900 and iPhone reflects the approach each company has towards users.
On the left- Apple- which believes in total control and domination always in the name of ‘user experience’ (yeah, poor sensitive iPhone users will die of shock if they see an app that’s not approved by Apple) and in ripping off as much money as they can out of their customerbase.

Nokia on the other hand (why Nokia alone, every other gadget maker)
just gives you the device and lets you do whatever you want with it within the usual operating parameters of temperature, humidity etc.
They also issue a disclaimer for any damages sustained due to 3rd party apps, which is also par for the course. On your computer, you don’t complain to the OS vendor when an newly installed application crashes, you take it up first with the software vendor!

So with a Nokia N900/N95/N82 etc, you have standard audio output jacks, standard USB ports/cables, full support for all relevant standards (Bluetooth filetransfer, A2DP, USB mass storage, uPnP, TV out, Java,Flash, full HTML, Media transfer protocol (for using with Windows media player), ability to share content in any number of ways and so on.

This does not restrict you in any way- you can connect any headphone of your choice, copy songs to and from anywhere, share photos any which way you want, use VOIP or whatever.

So the audience also differs. Here’s what the high end Nokia buyer would like:
Prefers value for money, flexibility of usage and power user features. Doesn’t mind style and good looks, but won’t buy a phone whose main selling point is only that.
    As for an iPhone user:
-Either a total Apple fanboy who’ll buy anything that comes out of Cupertino. Has more money than common sense, willing to put up with all the hidden charges levied by Apple by locking you into their proprietary ecosystem just for a pretty touchscreen.
Will instantly defend his stance by talking about jailbreaking without considering the irony of having to hack a phone that you paid good money for- so that it can do what other phones do sans meddling. And of course you void your iPhone warranty by doing that, and risk bricking it with each new firmware update. Or sit and wait for the next jailbreak firmware to release.
Usually technically clueless, would rather pay for a stupid ringtone than create one directly by snipping an MP3 file. Oh I forgot- you can’t just select a song and set it as your ringtone on a non jailbroken iPhone….can you? :)

  • matt

One of the thing people are forgetting is that it appears that people in the us tend not to care about all of the things described in the last however many posts. We don’t care about better stats if I only have one “ifart” type app to choose from.

Unfortunately it is about the ecosystem. The current stats announced today state that 60% of Ovi users download more than 1 app, with this said each Ovi user downloads and average of Six apps (in the last ~6 months). These are pretty decent numbers and if nokia could get 30% of the possible user base to do this they would move possibly 200M apps a year(50M devices * 30% * 6 = 100M apps downloaded in 6 months)

So 200M downloads to nothing to write off but it is not much compared to iphone users who buy their phones not to make calls, but rather do stuff with them…. Oh sh*t sounds like a mindshift that most global smartphone users have not made. And why did us smartphone users make this shift – M a r k e t i n g

Apple is the best marketing firm since the Obama campaign management they changed how we think about mobile devices and got people to stop saying ‘call me on my cell(phone)’ ‘to call me on my iphone’ Now in the US who else is marketing this product… ATT as well as so many other media org who are looking for a way to move content. If Nokia wants to be successfully they need to implement a similar strategy…. globally.

Maemo should not be an OS, but rather a content delivery platform. I want fifa to have apps like the mlb offers to use as a companion to champions league games.
there are some truly amazing uses of technology that will go unappreciated by the masses (like – the linked internet UI, panorama desktop, haptic feedback [now being adopted by the iphone only to be made novel again -just like cut and paste and soon to be multi-tasking] etc.)

End story is Nokia has an opportunity to change and drive the market. But they cant do this by waiting. India, China, Latin America, Europe and Russia. They should be pushing harder then hell in these emerging markets that dont have the same kind of history with mobile devices.

    Nokia must define markets….

  • http://rexzilla.livejournal.com/138675.html Rex

@Matt: You are forgetting one thing. Ovi is by no means the only way people can download apps for Nokia. Nokia does not force you to use Ovi Store the way Apple does with its App Store.
There are several websites out there that let you download apps for Nokia/Symbian – Getjar.com and Handango.com to name a couple. Just google for ‘Nokia application download’ and you’ll get several hits.

Also, don’t go by Nokia’s lack of success in the US market- which is dominated by mobile service providers. Everywhere else in the world, people are accustomed to buying their phones and mobile connections separately. Nokia enjoys tremendous brand recognition and value in India- it sells millions of handsets here as well as the rest of South Asia.
The iPhone was offered in India through the 2 biggest operators- Airtel and Vodafone- but the phones are tremendously expensive.
India has one of the lowest call rates in the world(incoming calls/SMS free BY LAW, and outgoing local call charges that in some cases work out to less than half an American cent per minute.)
The few people that want the iPhone all buy them off the grey market, jailbroken in advance. The rest continue with Nokia/HTC/Samsung/SonyEricsson.

I don’t understand the obsession with content delivery- why should Nokia have to ape Apple in controlling every channel of entry into the device? The flexibility in being able to get stuff from anywhere is quite a USP of its own.

Perhaps you mean it’s so difficult for Nokia users to google the apps they want? Ovi Store in its current form strives to address that, and for that matter, a Nokia smartphone user who is aware that he can install apps on his phone is not going to be stopped by lack of access to appstores on the device itself.

For that matter, Nokia already has the N-Gage platform for gaming on S60, where you can purchase/download games, upload your stats and compare scores with other users.

Nokia is primarily a hardware company- their business model has been to just sell devices until now. Unlike Apple, who’s already an old hand at the locked in ecosystem game, first with Macs that used proprietary hardware/peripherals only, then iPod-iTunes and now iPhone-AT&T.

  • Amjad

    hi guys
Nokia n900 is the best phone, but not the iphone. when comparing to iphone’s screen its waste. iphone is said that it has got the best UI. but to upload a song into the iphone we need a system with itunes installed. if its not there use of iphone is waste.
    comparing to camera iphone sucks.
sound quality and bluetooth headsets iphone sucks.
MMS option which nokia introduced 10 years before. but iphone 10 months back.

    overall nokia is the leader.

  • matt

    @Rex

No I understand that you are not forced to use ovi, just like you used to not be forced to use IE with a windows PC. but, it was there, it is easy to find, and it worked….

I also know that they are successfully in many other markets.

I just want them to be popular here… I have no other reason then I am selfish and I despise Steve Jobs as a person and refuse to buy his products.

  • Amjad

buddy this topic is about comparing n900 and the useless phone(iphone). not to be popular nor the windows

  • matt

@Amjad if it is not popular here the ecosystem that creates applications that are important to me will not be available. And if this is the case then the iphone is better, because despite the 19000 useless apps there is 1000 really useful apps from me to use.

Thats why being popular is important. it’s not just a phone. its a platform.

  • X

Well if you see the overall comparison N900 is the winner

  • matt

    X,

If you are talking about hardware I agree. IF you are talking about EVERYTHING including the ecosystem then it is still the i-phone despite all the facts.

I’m not bashing the N900, I just ordered one and quite frankly despise steve jobs and the things he stands for.

  • Andraeseus

That phone ROCKS!!!!! its fast. looks ****. multitasking just as well as my n95 and better with a waaaay better battery. truck loads of memory. hot swap micro sd. 5 mega pixel camera ( and for the record people do care about the lil mega pixels) Even copying sections that u can not edit from, and pasting. The curser thingy. FLASH 9!!!!!! does any other phone out there have flash 9 ? just curious. I think there may be one or 2 out there that i read about. Brand new UI (symbian/nokia was killing me and getting boring with it. my new phones were looking like my old phones) I think the iphone is slick too though. but it doesn’t compare in these areas. but I don’t think nokia is playing catch up. honestly I thought the n95 8gb gave the iphone a long kiss good night a long time ago. Especially since it was 3g ( so was the n95) and iphone was not. Not to mention video and a host of other missing things that in my opinion makes a smart phone a smart phone. I also understand why the iphone has a stronger base here in the US. The I Phone is a phone that even novice/in experienced cell phone users can appreciate and be awe struck by. It was targeted and made for the masses (smart marketing on apple’s part) I mean its not marketed or designed for people like me. Most customers here in the US could care less about the specific details in which nokia over towers over the iphone and that’s “IF” they even understood it. It’s (the i phone) however, very slick looking. Simple… Easy to use and does lots of neat tricks. The average phone user in the US is dazzled right there and needs no further convincing. I would, however need a lil more to sell me on it. They , the I phone enthusiasts, don’t need the phone to do all the things that I would need a smart phone to do nor do it to the same degree. I am not so easily fascinated by shiny things and bright colors that make noise. Just pointing out the role simplicity, newness, and attractiveness plays when coupled with existing branding and popularity in an eager market plagued with mundaneness. That alone will win the the personal preference tug of war initially every time. No disrespect to T-Mobile but I swear they sold that darn side kick over and over again with minor upgrades. They were selling customers essentially the same thing and we loved them for it. that’s how hungry, how frustrated and eager we were for something refreshing in the market. The iphone in spite of its FEW yet MAJOR draw backs gave us just that. Factual data and concrete results have fallen by the waist side. But now Nokia is giving us the best of both worlds I think with thsi new device. features, looks, practicality, and even a few things we didn’t expect or know we needed like the whole dash board concept (which is undoubtedly a much better experience then switching between multiple running apps on my n95 i’m sure) -Another leg up on the comp with the i phone was it’s huge screen. This made everything appear to be even more simpler. For example I would recommend the iphone to my dad who is 65 and my in laws who are over 50 and just about any average cell phone user looking to upgrade before ever suggesting something like the n95 (they wouldn’t know what to do with it. would be a waste of a device) or that waste of money n97 (sorry the n97 didn’t deliver on the scale it should have. and the n96 was simply the n95 in a prettier/different wrapper with more memory). Anyways I am happier that this new UI on the n900 seems to be simpler and possibly faster than my n95. I am all ready to buy this phone should they produce 850/1900 3g frequencies (hell i would even switch to t-mobile just to use it) but… I’m just worried about the software. i’m familiar with symbian but not maemo too much. i love the option to download all kinda cool apps so I am concerned if maemo has the quantity, quality, and availability that the symbian phones have. I suppose I will be doing some more research. Last Nokia tablet i got was the 7710.. although it may not have been a tablet really since it made phone calls too, but the point is that it sucked. I am gonna wait a while to see 1.. what the reviews and my friends think about it and 2.. to see if they will spurt out a upgraded version a month or so after as usual with new products. but i am almost certain I will definitely buy this phone

  • Strickmabil

WTH? “Tie if you want a keypad?” howcome? There’s only one phone that has it… why make it a tie?

  • http://rexzilla.livejournal.com/138675.html Rex

Because having an additional full keypad vs. having a touch only interface is a matter of personal preference.
Same way as there are people who prefer a keypad for typing SMS without looking at it or activating speed dials- whereas a full touch phone requires you to always look at it to do anything.
Having a touch only interface allows for a bigger screen relative to the phone, and so is great for watching video/taking pictures.

Both are just different ways of accessing the UI and neither has any clear all round advantage over the other.

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

Rex you rock ! Your explanation is bang on target for why i put a tie ..

  • http://rexzilla.livejournal.com/138675.html Rex

    @Varun: Thanks :)

I like to quench the hyperbole over the iPhone every chance I get-
but believe in a fair evaluation of all alternatives.
Nokia scores over iPhone in many ways- but it does have its flaws as well, and acknowledging them is what keeps one from going overboard into fanboydom.

  • Obsurveyor

Pretty sure you have the GPS wrong. It has a full GPS receiver WITH Assisted GPS, not simply A-GPS. It is just like the Nokia N810.

  • Krishkool

“OS iPhone Maemo 5 Linux Tie – till we see maemo apps”

    It shows he’s a Nokia fanboy…

  • matt

    “It shows he’s a Nokia fanboy…”

I agree a better approach would be to say unknown, but..

If he were a Fanboy he would have said Maemo because it is an open un-castrated os.

  • Shadi

they r both great phones and very good features but i dnt understand why iphones dnt have flash well thats fair and for n900 i hate bricks phones

  • Marcelo Chaves

    IF (n900.GPS == n810.GPS) {
    n900.fail();
    }

    ;((((((((

  • Jazzy

Well very simple answer. Apple doesn’t want apps made by PC developers. Apple wants all the money for them.
P.S: If you are a developer and want to program for the iPhone Apple will charge 30% of all profit that you make.
Thas’s why no no cross platform.
And also push the developers to use the Mac. :(

  • razz

    Shadi

Looks like you shit bricks as well

  • Jony

  • http://rexzilla.livejournal.com/138675.html Rex

As I’ve said before- even if we may compare the two, the N900 is way beyond the iPhone’s league and it makes no sense to compare the two.
Nokia isn’t targeting those who would go for an iPhone, that’s for sure.

  • Aki

When you want to have easy-controlled and a good multimedia-phone, the iPhone will be better choice because of the better touch screen and better usage and iPod etc.

But when it comes to business and PDA properties, the N900 will be the winner for sure. There are almost as many apps as in the normal PC, and the internet browsing and messaging are better in the Nokia.

Sorry for my bad english, I’m from Finland.(And that does not mean that I’m a Nokia fanboy:D)

  • http://a@b.com Rex

Why, what’s wrong with the multimedia on the N900? It can play back any format of video and you’re free to develop/download codecs for those that aren’t available. It has OpenGL based hardware acceleration for video and a pretty excellent music player as well.

  • ionsson

Some iphonies claim they can multitask,
running a couple of apps is not multitasking it’s maybe minitasking. I’m talking about downloading a divx dvdrip to watch later without any convertion, while listening to Jabber(internet radio) and playing a game, then you pause your game because your friend send you a IM or Emails, he want you to check out this funny video on the web, so you open you web browser and right before the funny part of the video your girlfriend call so you answer, it turn out she is free for the rest of the day, so you open your contact make a couple of reservations, and voila you go back to seeing the funny part right were you left off.

Do you know why you can’t multitasking?
Well allow me to illustrate you why, it’s simple we are in the midst of a new decade where your hardware and OS will be outdated, no longer fit to compete with the next generation of smartphones. and no matter how jailedbroken your iphony is, it’s hardware will just trembles by the mere thought of true multitasking.

  • aryan

why so about stupid i phone compare it with samsung omnia 2 or jet or se idou they are real contendors.Look at the iphone nor yu have gr8 camera nor u can play hd games as one in n900 bounce or ngage yeah! yu can play kid games, only to say that yu have an american brand phone then yu are wrong guys yu even cannot have 3rd party amazing applications thanks to n95 and n82 and those who say yu want powerful processor then go and buy phones that have 1000mhz snap dragon processors.please finish this iphone hype.

  • Aly

Fogot that app store 100,000 apps and cydia has another few thousands.. while nokia has umm.. 2,000 apps ? (MOST)

  • aryan

yeah! those stupid apps like buy yur lux from yur premimum app store

  • sight

n900 for me for personal reason, debian linux on the n900…

  • Paul

Simple answer for this discussion is:

Iphone is for US playboys: Only compatible with MAC, expensive, blocked for others cell operators, heating problems, crappy hardware, a real “american” phone !!!

Nokia N900 and others Nokia cells phones…: for working people, fully compatible with a lot of softwares and OS, now N900 linux compatible, fully unblocked, cheaper, better hardware, a real world wide business thinking cell phone.

Its like comparing the real new world with “America”: US is polluted, with the fat people of the world, economies are brooked by is own stupidity and making wars to anyone.
On the other side is, the ecological world using electric cars, trying to make peace and joining countries at the European union, gaining the world economies with a strong exchange, world thinking mind…, which side do you think is going to win ?

  • http://twitter.com/canadu Charles

Paul, you’re an ignoramus filled with hate! This is a hardware and software comparison between two devices and you found a way to bring your bigotry into it. What a jackass. Please crawl back into the caves you came out from and let people choose a device that suites them where ever in the world they live.
I am American and damn proud of it my friend. I also worked for Nokia for 5 yrs and have lived all over the world and probably yours as well. If you want to discuss politics and policies then lets do that on another blog if not, shut your hate spewing mouth up.
    BTW…..
I took ownership of my N900 from Amazon already and it does give my iPhone a run for its money. What I love most about the N900 is welcome back to resistive touch screen. I gotta admit, I’v been using my iPhone non stop since July after I sent back my N97 and have to think hard since winter is approaching and I can use the N900 without a taking my gloves off.

    P.S. Paul…..kill yourself.

  • denny

I phone is a great multimedia phone. You cant call it a smartphone neither can it stand any comparison with N900. If u really want to compare select a more worthy non US phone

  • Praveen

which among 3gs and n900 will perform faster(while openin apps, music etc) if the memory space is filled, like i use all the 32 gb or something

  • FuckinFanatic

    Obivously N900…

  • JC

Hi all, what about synchronizing the N900 with a mac? is it possible?

  • Anonymous

Comparison is not all revealing – N900 build in applications are proved to be currently very slow and buggy, there is also no battery power for practical work and it jams currently a lot taking also a lot of reboots (they are automated!!). Also, Maemo multi-operation system means that n900 is running simultaneusly apps that take capacity even without you know they are running. A power saving hint: Please turn of scrolling of anything in display to start with, it takes all power from the device! Happy enough, there is no manual to say how to do this for a regular user – Enjoy N900 – the Linux developmenter’s heaven!

  • Anonymous

I have the n900 and it is a great device! I am enjoying it a lot – yep there are powersaving things you can do like turn off your wifi or messenger when you are not using it. Making that change and im lasting the day with 2+hours of talking …

  • kaushal

iphone 3gs is the best phone ever…………..

  • hrishikesh

i guess u dont have the money to buy the n900.. so u ve become sour over it..
nway for ur brainwash..visit review of n900.. u’ll feel pathetic for urself..
    GBU.

  • Alien

Just one question – How do u close an app on N900?…let me guess, by pressing that tiny little cross icon..omygosh! that’s really convenient!!…its zooming mechanism is also great, even in the browser(no pinch!, u just hv to press those tiny little icons) plus the maps don’t rotate in the direction ur facing. Now that’s a big help…N900 rocks n iphone 3gs completely sucks just because of the amazingly smooth interface, multi touch, compass, iDisk, some incredibly beautiful games like “Hero of Sparta” n more than 100,000 apps. Who wants all that garbage?
    GO N900!!!

  • N900

eh no iphone is shit unless jailbroken. yes the n900 is a couple of years late but i have 1 and i give it a year and it will rule the market no problems.

Girl friend has iphone and when you compare the two for vid quality and the rest n900 wins hands down

  • Peter

Excuse me, but am I the only one sick of apple flamers? Multi touch – how the hell do you make good use of multi touch on a 3.5″ display??? Compass – dude, they have been putting these in cornflake boxes since stoneage. Games – tuech screen and gaming? ugh, try a portable game-console instead. 100.000+ apps – you will end up using 10 or 15 anyways…its just the way it is, lets face it, 3GS is a fantastic phone, but I got rid of it and bought an N900. The difference is incredible. Physical keyboard is physical keyboard, typing is 3 times faster, and in the end it all comes down to that.

  • Rex

It’s quite simple, really. Firstly, Apple fanboys are largely American. By definition, they have never seen a smartphone before 2007. Here’s a cumulative list of what I’ve been able to do with my phones, easily, over the last 5 years:
I’ve been able to post photos to my blog via MMS, write blog posts using a J2ME midlet, surf wap sites, copy/paste text, take photos and listen to FM radio on my circa 2004 Nokia 7250i. It also had voice dialing.

In 2005, I got a 6630 that ran the fully multitasking Symbian S60, so to the above list you can add mp3 playback,(but subtract FM radio) calendar sync with Outlook,POP3/IMAP email,64 MB mini SD card, ability to set any song as a ringtone, themes to customize the user interface and icons, bluetooth support for file transfer and modem as well as headset, ambient light sensor,1 megapixel camera with 3GP video recording and 3G support (though India is yet to have a 3G network). Oh, and a shitload of applications and games.

The following year,2006, I got an N73- to the above, add 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash, stereo speakers, FM radio again, MTP support (so you can manage the device with windows media player), USB Mass storage mode, front camera for 3G video calls and a web browser that could display full websites, printing via bluetooth, stereo profile for bluetooth (A2DP),viewers for MS Office documents, 3D effects for ringtones, posting photos directly to Flickr, and posting to any blog using XMLRPC, including wordpress/typepad/livejournal/Blogspot with LifeBlog. Did I mention apps n games?
In 2007 came the great iPhone.
The N73 lasted me till 2008, when I got an N82, so to the above again, add 5 megapixel camera with xenon flash and geotagging, TV out support with cable, full support for Flash Lite in the web browser,A-GPS, wifi, UPnP, a 3D graphics accelerator chip that lets me play the Symbian ports of Quake 1, 2 and 3, about 90 MB free RAM for running apps, a podcasting client, and a streaming internet radio client.

And after all this, I’m supposed to be impressed by the great iPhone?

  • J

Common guys let’s finish these kind of teasing comments, I have been using smartphones for years and now today I got tired of it and I wanted to change, and I do not care about megapixels and gps etc.. because today I just want to have a nice phone and I choose the Iphone, perhaps later next year I will get back to Nokia and buy the next N900 version… who knows, there is no more to discuss or argue, the N900 is better for many aspects and the Iphone has been promoted so well and so much that many people want to have it…
I am in the Netherland and on the train in the morning I see more Iphones then others, even though the price and the contract you have to sign for having it is bad…

  • Grabejud

Ive used iphone since the 2g until 3g..its a great phone indeed for its purpose which is the multi touch capacitive screen. but then again the n900 has a much better web capabilities, and screen resolution..if this thing can only run secure java and can do internet banking, then im all sold for the n900..

  • J

I thought about the Internet banking and this kind Of things until a friend of mine asked me
but how many times are you going to do Internet naming from the phone and next question is do you really wanna do that on a mobile phone……

  • Tony

N900 if for professionls but iPhone for gudget lovers

  • Neutral

i have n900, and im speechless of it, and what it is able to do.

iphone is great. but n900 is totally from another planet, iPhone developer team said about multitasking “not worth making” and nokia cant make multitouch due to iphones pantent of it.

well yeah, iphone has 100.000 apps?.. i have a program on my n900, that can install every single software ever made for linux, but who really cares? i daily use only few good applications for example firefox, skype and transmission (bittorrent). And the last application found i did, was flashlight (maemo’s very own little program to turn the cameras flash led light on as long as till you turn it off)

ouh yeah,,about the games? i’ve heard that iphone has a lot of shit games?.. n900 have Emulators: sega, gameboy, nintendo (nes, snes etc)
so if i really want to get the old great games,,i use emulator and play any of those unlimited games.. and no doubt, wont take long til the linux nerds will make an emulator to run iphone games and apps xD..

ok but back to the topic-> iPhone is a great device which is easy to use, and 1 button to go back to main.

n900 is a phone for a bit more developed user who has higher than 95 iQ (avarage iQ in usa is 95). I bet, that Albert Einstein would’ve choosed nokia n900 instead of iphone ^__^

peace, both are good devices, its all up to you, i choosed n900.

  • N900

Yes iphone has apps id be disapointed if it didnt as thats what it was built for twat, N900 is an internet tablet or if you would like me to explain a scaled down computer that is completely customizable which the IPHONE isnt get your facts before you comment on something you no fuckall about

  • Crazy

    Hi everybody,
Let me tell you my experience base on true story. I wanna know which mobile phone is the best either Iphone or N900. I drop both phone in the pool (5ft depth). You know what !!! N900 win. Cuz N900 can get a call in 5ft depth water. Can’t you believe it!!! Water proof, you can enjoy talking in the water. Nice Tried.

  • LUIS CHAGUACEDA

Hello mates my humble opinion is i have an unlock shop and i have iphone 3g,3gs and symbian phones like samsung omnia h.d. and SE satio, im waiting to get my n900 , any way heres the deal

symbian phones can do a lot of things better then the iphone, yes i know symbian its away a biyon from iphone OS but i have to say i use my nokia 5800 yes a lousy 5800 ,and it fits better for my use i use it as a modem i recibe my mails i stay online all day long in msn i have installed a lot of app´s that woks i dont care i apple store has 1,000000000 of app,s if doesnt work for me i have to say in the app´s area symbian its better in the game are iphone, and im talking about symbian, let wait to see maemo 5 what have to offer us because if we talk about hardware they are the same yeah yeah the 5mg camera its better , but let me ask you you use it? lets remember that i good hardware only can be good if you use good app´s so the main test should be running the same app´s (or equivalent) in iphone and also n900( i know its maemo) and make a test (i have to say nokia n900 has better thing to offer in the multimedia side and dont forget tethering that comes OTB im not a nokia fan as a matter of faq i have a macbook pro and also a macbook !!!!!! just as i say i have an unlocking shop so i get to se a lot of phones!!!! thats my 2 cents

p.s. sorry for my band english im from Guatemala

  • fddfg

hahaahahaha i laugh who needs 100000 apps the stupid istore gets repetitive and shitter after about first 750 apps

coz it is way cheaper dere, over here it rnd 700 dollars..
But what abt the 2 year agreement, i am not sure abt that…plz help!

if i dont use the sim card that they provide, so will that be helpful

  • nikos

…says the noob iphone owner. you can close the widgets(thats what you wanna say..but i guess you dont know the word since iphone does not support). in iphone you dont have the option to have multitasking..try multitasking(even nokia 7650 was able to run many appz concurrently..8years ago).
applications so far are not slow, you just have to write something. you wont convince anyone. i have iphone 3gs and n900. both are great..my personal belief about these devices is that iphone is very easy to use..as a toy…n900 requires research(especially at this stage..later maybe less)..i would compare it like preffering using windows 7(iphone-very easy to use with limited capabilities-many stuff locked) with linux(n900-everything is unlocked..you can do anything with your device…nokia was like that all the time..but now even better with maemo!)

  • nikos

i like having a real internet browser, hardware keyboard, real camera..i wont mention the linux based OS which has unlimited capabilities…i m sorry, i ll go for n900. iphone is old.

  • http://yahoo.com ratan

no doubt n900 is winner ,,,,,on ny case …xcept app part ..dat tooo … even n900 may hav reached it..but a bitt..hav to lose….but apart 4m apps iphone fails as a phone on the basis of communication part ,,,

  • mac

about the user interface is the n900 better than the iphone? cuz n97 sucks.

  • Anonymous

anwser to all. steady it’s only mobile phone. you must be all alone with your phone. get a life geek pots

  • Fred

All this iphone is better N900 is better is no use. One thing i wanna say is that iphone got so many apps (most garbage) but some good ones but it took iphone like 3 years to get to where it is. Do you not think N900 will have amazing apps after 3 years? compare N900 to when iphone just came out and it had bricks for the game section of app store

  • Rex

..says mister anonymous, who took the trouble of coming here and reading this post.

  • Inko.Gnito

Well it really depends about the user.N900 is the choice of those who want QWERTY-keypad and better web-surfing experience, camera, like a computer being,resistivity,stylus-users on that case especially the chinese and other asians, and of course for desktops,So the N900 is more like a computer not a mobile phone.

And those who defend iPhones like that it has got it’s own brand, the looks, capasitivity, the size.

My phone is the N900 because I think it’s better than iPhone 3GS for my use,my former phone was iPhone 3GS but now I prefer Nokia in every case.

  • ajay

    have a life “anonymous”
    if anyone’s a geek its u

if ur 5 and play with useless toys….

  • ajay

    shut up u fool
iphone is better bcoz if u drop it it breaks,
no flash ya that’s really great
and wow the repetitive, useless apps thats is good!
what delights me is that the software is so open..
and of course that stupid 5mp camera ovbiosly is second rate to iphone’s sh*%#y 3 mp camera
    go iPhone!

    shut up you apple fanboy

  • big j

this has not helped at all which phone i want to get. im thinking iphone because a couple of mates have one and they love it, but thinking a year down the line everyone is going to have the n900….. probabaly the biggest decision of my life. i dont want the phone for business i want it to call and text mates and obviously play around on games and fart arse about on apps. im thinking ihpone now and maybe n900 or upgrade in a year os so, once its on his feet and has a bigger following

  • Ben

your final sentence is funny, well done on insulting people then making an novice mistake like that!

  • Phil

Two very different phones trying to compete in the same market. Its like a Formula One car against a Nascar they are designed for different environments.

I have had the N900 since end of december and loved the internet browser and the general speed of the applications/features. However I did not like the amount of applications available through ovi or maemo and the media player is very slow and doesnt match up at all to itunes. Furthermore making a call is difficult and it is extremely chunky. Nevertheless as an internet tablet there is nothing better on the market but a micro computer is not what i need from a phone. Therefore chose to switch the iphone 3gs this month and find it much quicker, more responsive and at the end of the day an amazing all rounder stylish phone, great music and great apps.

I really dont understand all the american bashing, I can careless about an I-Phone. I just purchase my n900. The I-phone really is a great product but intended for people who isnt all that savy with tech who just wants a entry level smart phone. once you understand that you can see why the mass market perfer I-phone. In the end The n900 vs I-Phone arguement is like comparing a mac(I-phone) vs PC(n900) there people out there who are not really that tech savy perfer mac over pc why because its simple and handles there basic needs well. I recall one of my friends an avid mac product whore saying as soon as they release the I-pad hes getting it. Immediately I question him saying you know tablet pc’s been out for a very long time. he’s response well the I-pad has no usb ports nothing no wires isnt that cool. I had a great laugh after that, futhermore what I am getting at its pointless to argue about people preference. N900 great of product as it is. its not intended for the general crowd.

  • hussain

this compare is totally not fare if u use iphone correctly u will decide then which on is better for me i suggest toki woki

Look guys I have seen and used the nokia N900, and I also used the I phone 3gs. After using both I went for the I phone really guys it’s about how would u like to use ur phone. The N900 is amazing but it lacks usability on the other hand the I phone owns usability. If we are taking about the web browsers well the nokia N900 has a great full flash support while the I phone 3gs doesn’t but still the I phone’s browser is much more smoother. I don’t know why nokia made the N900 a resistive touch screen this is really annoying, if it was a capacitive touch screen it would have been a much better phone. To summarize every thing up , nokia u did a good Job with the nokia N900 still u lack apps u must freshen up tha ovi store as it sucks hard against the apple app store, also nokia u must increase the usability of the phone and design it such that it can be more user friendly. Apple on the other hand u must increase the the specs on ur phones for instance u need to put more specs into ur camera, such as flash and zoom , I know that there is an app for zooming on the I phone but I think it’s something important and essential in the camera it must be there. I am not supposed to download An app for zooming with my camera it’s something ridiculous. Also the web browsers lacks flash which is something annoying for some apple users but it’s fine by me I don’t really need the flash support that much. I hope I have been neutral as much as possible in the last pragraph. Guys I was a nokia fan a really huge nokia fan I used to bring nokia phones since the nokia 3210,6210,3310,5210,6600,N70,N95,N97 by the way nokia made a terrible job on the Nokia N97 it really disappointed me in nokia I brought it for a month then I sold it. This phone was the main reason I have left nokia. Any how I hope for Noki to wake up and make the N900 as it’s come back phone.

  • chris

no matter what kind mobile out there nokia does the best mobiles around the world and n900 is fantastic i used iphone 3gs but i always use nokias now back n900 it is just nokia what uyou cant say no for

  • Xx

‘A good mulitmedia phone’? I disagree! The N900 best fits that.. It’s just so obvious comparing the camera with 5 MP vs 3MP.

  • Xx

I agree with you Rex.. It’s just so obvious comparing 3 vs 5 MP.

  • Xx

Hahaha.. Who needs those 100, 000 apllications when your phone does’nt work well esp the 3 MP camera. The N900 wins, And yeah.. This article is not all about the applications. Okay?

  • Xx

Yeah. I just SPRINKLED my coffee on my iPhone and it was like and boom! All GONE.

  • AnimeVamp360

guys guys why all the fuss, these both devices are really cool and theres no point arguing, just enjoy the device(s) you own.i am a learining technitian and currently working with 02.i have both phons and must admit they are tough to tackle each other with but i’d give my vote to the n900 on this one because i am truely amazed how powerfull it is.it can boot several OS and much more in future and as for apps it wont be long untill some cool apps will be released because it is fully open source and has the power/capabilities to run a huge number of high end apps simontaneously which my iphone cant.also the n900 has full flash support as well as a very cool browser with alot support (mozzilla firefox) theres no need for all the fuss in who has the better device id say they both are good but it comes down to what the user prefers.the iphone is a phone but the n900 is a high end mobile sized computer with phone capabilities.the resistive touch screen on the nokia is good because now i dont have to keep my fingers away from the screen in case of accidental calling and opening things.dear iphone/N900 users please dont hate but rather give a chance and see each device for yourself what you prefer.

How come that the N97 mini costsmuch higer compared to N97 and N900. With this 2 phones only at $539 compared to N97 mini at $549. Please reply ASAp if anyone knows. :)

  • Xx

I use both phones and almost read all the articles about Nokia N900 vs. Apple iPhone 3Gs.

  • Xx

Sure it is. The Nokia N900 is like a mobile computer and is different compared to other Nseries phones. Especially it uses the Maemo.

  • Xx

Of course. It will become more faster and convenient to use. Just take time to adjust. The iPhone 3Gs is way old compared to the Nokia N900. Using your N900 is like bringing your laptop everywhere.

  • bandi amuk

    i want both phone :)

  • aryan

and yur post=0 as nokia has taken a long time to improven810 and it evolved in n900

  • aryan

yeah! yu iphone freak let me explain yu iphone is prettiest of all as cute as girl of yur dream and n900 is yur is his husband boasting power yu have not even imagined so did yu understand

  • sid

m usin nokia n900. but wht i feel thr is very less application n games on this phone just good phone for intenet browsing n camera. n phone is chabby. i phone 3gs is good all over

  • Miika

Rubbish. I tried running several games, Safari, iPod, Youtube (the App), E-mail, SMS and some lighter apps at the same time and my jailbroken iPhone 3GS managed to do it well. Sure, the games weren’t smooth anymore, but who the hell would want to play multiple games at the same time anyway? If I’m playing a single game, I can pretty much run any app in the background I could possibly need. So what exactly is there about multitasking I can’t do with my iPhone? Those of you who are interested: Backgrounder and ProSwitcher combined are the right tools for the job. Like mentioned, you need a jailbroken iPhone and Cydia.

It’s a myth that iPhone isn’t powerful enough for multitasking, and if you don’t know what you’re talking about you should just keep your mouth shut.

Oh, did I mention that Apple is planning to release official multitasking support next summer?

Personally I think iPhone and N900 are both great devices, but they are for different needs. N900 is more like a small laptop, where iPhone is more like a classic cellphone.

    -Miika

  • aryan

hey yu jphone what about yur iphone which captive which will hang when it will heat up and unless and until the phone battery does not end up, yu will stay admiring yur useless iphone 3g or may yu have more stupid 4g and let me tell yu that when it happens my friend it is the worst thing to happen and all you bloggers the answer why nokia did not use captive screen was perhaps this problem as screen heats it hangs and yu cannot do anything but wait as my friend Mukesh, as has been dealing this problem with his iphone 3gs and therefore he is switching iphone to htc hero (android) and that is a good choice after n900

  • http://twitter.com/jumperman Jumperman

    Hi,

I’m planning to buy a new phone, and I’m deciding between the iPhone 3GS and the N900. What do you guys suggest I get? To give you an idea of what type of phone user I am, I’m currently using a Nokia 5800 and the only major stuff I use are Facebook, Nimbuzz (YM, Twitter, etc. application), Google Buzz/Maps. Based on the comments here, I guess I like the N900 more, but I’m not giving up on the 3GS yet because I own a MacBook Pro and I want to sync my laptop to my phone. Please enlighten me, I don’t want to end up regretting whatever phone I might get afterwards.

  • http://www.fonearena.com Varun Krish

Since you are app focused and aim to sync with your mac the 3gs would be a good option. But N900 browser is cool

  • aryan

go for n900 as more internet capable and more powerful than 3gs and
the apps are in process of developing but i insure you these apps of n900 will be far better than 3gs and it is so unfortunate for me
that n900 is not available in India otherwise i had got it and there is no tension of jailbreaking and let me tell you the most disturbing fact of iphones and ipods is that if the screen gets heat up your phone will hang up in iphone and you can operate it until your phone battery completely drains up as they have irremovable battery and OMAP3 ARM 600mhz processors are more capable then you imagine of n900 and it easily manhandles 1ghz snapdragon processors as my Intel core2duo 2.0ghz does with pentium
3.2ghz and 1 GB of application memory, 48GB of storage, 3,5“ WVGA touch display (800 x 480 pixels)better than 3gs,Adobe Flash 9.4 and full AJAX support, 5Mpix camera with Carl Zeiss optics phew! possibility are endless in this phone dude

  • http://twitter.com/jumperman Jumperman

Thanks! Yeah, I never thought of the “hang” part…So everything the 3GS can do, the N900 can really do better? Does the 3GS have any real good advantage over the N900? I’m like 60% decided to get the N900 now, I just want to hear some feedback from you guys who use either phone.

  • young jezzy

i had a iphone and Sony ericson and when i bought the n900 i relazied that the iphone and the Sony ericson are for girls any hit and it is damaged but n900 is solid like rock so dont say it is the f**** best

  • young jezzy

i had a iphone and Sony ericson and when i bought the n900 i relazied that the iphone and the Sony ericson are for girls any hit and it is damaged but n900 is solid like rock so don’t say it is better than it

  • Alosious

Guess you’ve never tried the SE X10 yet.
I wonder how u like to carry such a big N900 with u.

  • Fidel

If you want a light little phone then don’t buy a smartphone i don’t fucking care about size or weight all i care is about pure power and features and the N900 is the world’s best phone for those if you want light little girly phone go for the Iphone if you want a powerful beast get the N900 so all idiots with saying “awmg 1ts too bulkyyy i want a light girly phone pl00x” shouldn’t get to vote which is better

  • Jumperman

Haha, very well said! I’m checking out the N900 later to see for myself. In all fairness, 3GS is fast and smooth, especially since I’m used to the 5800. But I’m not too sold on it. We’ll see, I really appreciate the tips/comments, thanks so much!

  • p.pari

yeah, n900 raw power mobile computing with multitasking , firefox browser with adobe flash9…

  • Andrei RO

I had iPhone 3GS ’till last month, now I’m using N900. I can say that Apple was a nice phone only to go disco with, but Nokia is a serious piece of work. Come on guys, overclocking and change processor frequency is only a piece from all U can do with N900! With 3GS what is exceptional, zoom a photo with 2 fingers?! (My N900 runs on 1000MHz now during day and 250MHz during night, by the way..)
My personal impression: except weight (which I don’t bother about)N900 beats 3GS in everything.

  • aryanfr1

your xperia x10 is out dated overclocking and change processor frequency i can easily surpass yur phone processor and yur software is not better than n900 and n900 seamlessly run yur android, mac, windows by dual booting and many more so back off with yur xperia x10 which dad of 3gs but son grand, grand ,grand son of n900

  • johnpaul

I really regret for breaking my N900. It was really a damn good phone except the lack of potrait mode and ussd support

  • SAYWHAT

    urrrmmmmmmmmmm…………

why is everyone hating on the iphone ???????
it is simple and it sold more than any single nokia. it has tons and tons of apps. tell me all will you use all the features of the iphone WELL NO. same goes for the N900 you will not use all the features so look at both you like the iphone well get it if you like the n900 then get it but i did not like the n900 as i had the n97 and most of the N series phones are factory faulty on sale and i had enought of 6 years of N-series mobiles that require me to fix the phone via software updates. that is bullshit. now i have 3gs it does all the things it says 100%. n900 does 75-80% of what is should and that my friend is a fact. if your a fanboy well then kiss my ass you techno ejiat, get a life.

n900 is fast but it has its faults stop hating the iphone. nokia has been leading the phone market for 20 years still they cant make a phone that has a fanbase like the iphone apple has 25% of smartphone market in the usa 2nd after rim and nokia is nowhere to be seen. STOP SUCKING CORPORATE COCKYYY FANBOYS

  • David

I’ve never been a fan of Apple althought have worked on Macs for over 4 years now (12 on PCs). I like Apple’s thoroughness in UATs – something that other companies are lacking these days and under pressure of marketing guys release products which turn out to be full of bugs like the N73 that have had for years etc. On the other hand, I don’t like Apple’s attitude towards their customers and constraints they are putting on them. Isn’t it all going towards open source direction or are they becoming so greedy? For me it’s like buying a super car with a contract not allowing you to look under the hood and do some undamaging tuning or, in some cases, even worse – they are telling you where you can drive.
Therefore, I’m going for the N900 to avoid Apple’s products which are becoming just as proprietary as Microsoft is – I like to have the choice of how I use things especially after you pay for them loads of $£! Moreover, what turns me off is advanced use of marketing psychology – they’ve been doing it very well too ;/

  • aryan

yu american hype fan boy yu are shaken by the power and gaining popularity of n900 and no so that is why yu are blogging and using such abusing words has iPhone not taught yu to pay respect to yur father and this this just starting and let me tell yu yu have not ever used n series because if yu had who would miss it even yu have superior phone and stupid iPhone only hype look at xperia x10 ,htc hd2 they are real competitors and apps they will bulk in ovi store as maemo is new and it happened with iPhone 2g and even in this blog majority of bloggers have loved n900 so bye

  • aryan

    well said like yur thought

  • ItsXx

Yup, N900 is the winner. But take note, N900 does’nt support/cannot carry ATT’s 3G service. Even though I’m with N900 I would say that. :) Just a reminder, if you’ll get the N900, DON’T use ATT. N900 is really a mbile computer, fully integrated. BUT will you get it now, or wait for the next iPhone? It’s really up to you guys, CHOOSE wisely.

  • ItsXx

We are not hating on the iPhone, it’s just comparing to N900. Even though I’m with N900, iPhone 3Gs is cool enough for me comparing to those other phones. ;)

  • ItsXx

    With N900′s and 3G s’ browser, I would prefer iPhones’s Safari. Than N900′s Firefox.

  • aryan

yeah! and you will prefer a Messy Ferguson Tractor than Bugatti Veyron ,moped than y2k yes thats coooooolllll

  • shiva

at present iam using n97 but it is not that much good i lost hopes on nseries and i thought to buy iphone 3gs but when nokia launched n900 from that timeiam in confuse which mobile to buy please sugesst me which mobile to buy please

  • aryan

hey i have just seen apple 4g specs and that has also only one thing better than n900 is that it has 940 x 640 and it is 4g ARM-based i Pad processor as in the Nokia N900 so that is same in still wait wait what is Nokia n8 this it’ll be rocking a 12 megapixel camera (with Carl Zeiss optics and a Xenon flash), 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen, HDMI output, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD expansion slot, HD video recording, access to Ovi Store apps, free Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation, and of course, the company’s new Symbian^3 operating system. The N8 touts multiple, personalizable homescreens “which can be loaded with apps and widgets,” native multitasking, support for multitouch gestures and integration with the Qt software development environment. It’ll also ship in a variety of lovely hues 50 hours of music playback price is just around Rs.22000 phew! one was (n900) a headache with its powerful specs now another as it is same style as iPhone so people have choice coolll

  • ria

Rs.22000 in india yes i also saw that, aryan are right this will shut them those who want capacitive screen and 12 megapixel wow! thanks aryan yu rock thanks for update

  • tuds

n900 is the best.U can feel the difference betn n97 & n900..Screen resolution much more better than ipone.querty keypad having pluspoint for chating, browing & all.

  • Joe

I think the iPhone wins cause.
real keyboards are for the past, virtual keyboards are the future.
I think Nokia sucks, this is the only good phone from Nokia the rest of the phones are crap and should be illegal. The N97s touchscreen should be illegal, Symbian should be illegal casue it sucks so bad.

  • ItsXx

Nah. Scientifically, it’s not about really the time. N900 is also on virtual keyboard. If you won’t use the qwerty it’ll not shred off, common sense. And, N900 is operating on Maemo Linux, not Symbian. Also, this is about N900 vs. 3G s not N97, okay? N97 touch screen is illegal? So, why not also throw your iPhone ’cause it has touch screen. We need to be scientific here! We don’t need to act like we’re from 1901, this is 2010.

  • unkown

i have heared that n900 is having problems of hanging,i have read on some site reviews

  • Gabriel

    N900 FTW!

Only advantages of the iPhone is the games and the multi-touch, for everything else, N900 rules!

  • Leda

Only if you’re a man. Women prefer to have real keyboards. We usually have long nails. Actually even for guys and gals who have fat fingers, real keyboard is preferred.

  • kiran

N900 is going to change the face of mobile…..any way i decided to buy one..im not gong to read any more reviews..thanks for all reviews….

  • aryan

it has already changed the web experience and mobile processor power dear, now android is trying to captitalize on it but gr8 choice in my word sensible becoz these iphone fan boys will buy iphone and try also that everyone also buy it and dont buy other very good mind set and now u will get meego OS in it and this phone is only made to popularise the new OS the next generation will have TiOMAP 4440 1 GHz dual core processor which will bring 1080p full hd in life,20 mp camera and multitasking beyond imagination.

  • soren

    Hi guys and girls,
I have been using the N900 for about 3 months now, and I am hooked !
There are too many pluses to list here, but the minuses are :

    1) It lacks support for divx – which I use for watching movies online

    2) you can connect to it with vnc (remote control, very handy when you want to to major tasks on the phone), but the screen saver turns off the screen, when you are not touching it.

    3) I often use the phone plugged into a wall plug – watching a 2 hour movie drains the battery. Stupid that you can’t configure it to ignore power saving when plugged in.

    4) Skype and other IMs are integrated into the device – which is nice, but for administring your account you still need to connect using a regular computer – if you want to search & add a friend, for instance.

And there are more and similar issues, but most of my complaints are software based.
All in all it is more like having a real pc in phone size, which is awesome, but can also be a little trying – you have to be a nerd or at least semi-nerd to use this phone efficiently.

Would I rather want an iPhone ? Not even if you gave it to me as a present. N900 is out of the hands of Apple and Google, and it has some of the most competent people backing it – great forums, a multitude of functions, and the software IS being improved all the time – you can do packet analysis with wireshark while listening to the radio (internet or fm, your choice) – if you are an IT professional this will turn out to be a real timesaver for you.

  • miisznokia

I have been using n900 for the last 3months, and i also have n97.. i can really say nokia has stepped up big time. if i was to choose between iphone 3gs and n900 i’d still pick n900. it is very useful and compact, it is totally a mobile computer. if iphone gets a new design, and put a querty keypad, get an adobe flash support, then i might as well get iphone.. but for now, i’m in love with my phone. iphone are for children, they’re good at games. i have an ipod and i think it’s got everything in it apart from not being able to put a sim card in it but it’s doing what iphone can do.

  • TheDood

Sorry Apple, The N900 really is a killer device. I have both 3GS and N900 and its not close! In fact, the 3GS doesn’t even belong in the same league! The N900 was released in late 2009, which makes it a rather dated device (in this day and age), and I would STILL put it up against ANY smartphone on the market – including the HTC Evo, ANY Blackberry or iPhone 4! There is NOTHING on the market comparable to the N900!

hello…….friends i have a lot of phone….HTC nokia and even apple……..i got 9 smartphones…..but believe me N900 is on the top…..now i dont even use my apple 3GS………but for those who hate N900….here’s question……can u tell me even a single phone thats not been hated on net ?????………

  • Barn

N900′s a near-perfect phone, by any means. But iPhone having ‘tough time competing’? Really?
HTC Evo 4G had a tough time competing with iPhone, Nexus One had tough time competing with iPhone. No matter how weak iPhone is, it will always be the iconic one. It’s Apple, they make shiny things, people like shiny things. Apple makes good design and good at marketing.

  • s7ep

n900 rocks and rules, although there are some bumps and bruises, but it’s un-comparable. best smartphone so far, so good, so what…

  • Rex

    N900 uses a resistive touchscreen.
Pros – Very precise input, can be used with a stylus, useful for Far Eastern language input, can be used with gloves also, supports precise handwriting input.
Cons – Not very sensitive, need to apply slight pressure.

    iPhone uses a capacitative touchscreen
Pros – Finger friendly. Easy to tap and use multitouch gestures.
Cons – Can only be used with a finger, or a special capacitative stylus. Can’t be used with gloves. Cannot be used for precise input as it relies on the finger tip which is thicker than a stylus.

  • nader

guys i want to buy a new phone but m so confused n900 or i phone 3g 16 gb…same price …so plz help me to choose

  • xguy

the world wont see a better smartiphone than n900 in the next decade xD

  • Prasad

Guys…n900 is no doubt the best phone.but id really wanna buy phone at 25k-27k…then just dont think of n900…Go for samsung Galaxy-S…UnBeatable…The ONE…Beats “i-phone 4″ !!!!! Features ties.Since Galaxy-s is cheaper than i-phone4 it now overtakes any smart phones in market..

  • Ramdas Bhandarkar

I decided to wait for next devices though I belive in the capacity of apple as well as Nokia. It takes time to understand pros and cons of a device meanwhile devices with more advanced hardware and software hit market with more features and application. The E&C devices are rapidly changing and confuse consumers.
Apple has much to offer but Nokia have more in there armoury.
Warranty and service is key factor and In India Nokia is a winner owing to service network.

  • sanjeev

n900 is rocxxxxx…..i have used asus, htc, iphine, samsung glxy and there is no phone in the mkt which can be compared with 900…it a powerful computer in you pocket….

  • manisha

the nokia N900 is a amazing phone….when compared it with apple smart phone…N900 seems better…. the back stand option of n900 is so impressive…….i m goin to buy the N900 very soon……..
as i m a fan of nokia n series phones.I alreadt hav the n series……… NOKIA IS THE BEST BRAND IN INDIA ,IT ALSO PROVIDES THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICES …

  • Fazal

    Hi Manisha..
Yes it is impressive and a powerful gadget. It is an open source which makes it far superior than any phone :)
Im using this since Nov 2009 and still feel thrz so much to xplore. The only backdrop is battery..Sucks big time :(
All the best for your soon to be N900 ;)

    Nokia N900 GANA
