Sony Mobile to launch Firefox OS device in 2014

Mozilla previewed the first commercial build of its Firefox OS at the MWC 2013. The company had announced that Alcatel (TCL), LG, ZTE and Huawei would release smartphones running Firefox OS later this year. Telefónica one of the operator partners for the Firefox OS has announced that they have partnered with Sony Mobile to bring the Firefox-powered mobile devices next year.

Alcatel One Touch Fire and the ZTE Open running Firefox OS was announced at MWC 2013 earlier this week. Sony did not announce any new devices at the MWC 2013.

We have already seen the Sony Xperia tipo and the dual-SIM variant tipo dual entry-level handsets that brought Android 4.0 to mass markets at a reasonable price. It would be interesting to see what Sony has to offer in the same segment with a different OS, since the the first 2 Firefox OS devices are strictly for entry-level segment.

The Firefox OS is built to open Web standards that offers every feature in the phone developed as an HTML5 application. It even has Firefox Marketplace that lets you download apps.

Sony expects to launch the Firefox OS device in 2014. No word about the launch countries, but it would probably go on sale in Spain from Telefónica since they are the official partner.
