BSNL 3G Tariffs / Plans Unleashed

on February 23, 2009 – 8:24 pm106 Comments

Well BSNL Launched 3G Services in Chennai yesterday.

Now BSNL has announced the 3G Tariffs and plans .

The good news is that it will be available both on Prepaid and PostPaid.

You have to purchase a new 3G SIM card for Rs.300 and the website says that migration from 2G to 3G would not be possible.

We are not sure if it means just getting a new SIM card or getting a new number as well. Its most likely that it would be just the SIM.

Just in case if your wondering what kinds of speeds are possible on 3G

    Hi,
can we opt for a 3g data plan and use the SIM on a 3g enabled phone? And use it to connect my laptop through USB?

i m interested in buying ipad when it will launch in india ……. i wanna know what are the internet packages available for it????? plz reply :)

    • Applefan

There are no specific packages available for the iPad but the above mentioned data plans work with the iPad.But you have to cut your mini sim and make it into a micro sim(google it to find out how) as the iPad accepts only micro sim.I have my iPad 3G working with bsnl 3G.

  • PRASHANTKUMAR GAUTAM

sir i want to for mostly use to internet pls reply me

  • rajashekar

I purchased a 3g data card from BSNL. Although it is rated 3.6Mbps the Engineer told me that it could operate only at 1Mbps and the rating marked was under ‘factory’ conditions. However, when I checked the speed it works only at 0.5Mbps. Hence I was shocked to see an advertisement claiming over 7mbps. Should there not be a law against such flasehood?

Further, the usage counter on the card’s software is not true either. I was informed that the actual and right counter was in BSNL and it shows about 30% more than the one on your computer!! You have to call them every time to get the actual reading.

And what’s more the usage counter stopped counting after a week. Now I have to take the SIM to BSNL and leave it for a ‘few’ days. They do not come over to your house and provide a service like the private companies!

Watch out for the 18 GB free download claim – it is only 3 Gb @ 1 Gb a month during daytime and the other 15 Gb is available only from 11 pm to 7 am when no one uses the computer!!!

bsnl towers are crap, modems full crap (chinese). start using do-co-mo from nov 5th

      • Divakar

jeevan, have u checked with the docomo on what modem they r offering? Let me know in case if u have details? As i have checked up its the same Huwei. As Venkatesh has written the users loaded to a tower decides the speed and this is common to all operators.

    • Yadava

Thanks for your input Mr. Rajshekhar. Being a govt. owned company, BSNL does have tendency for many false claims technically which are simply not possible or feasible. In my perception, their staff are also deliberately allowing degradation in their services with connivance of other private operators, a fact outright not accepted by their higher-ups. Telecom dept. has made more than enough money with their monoply in the past and are now facing tough competition with other srvice providers in India.
I had few occasions to interact with some senior officers of BSNL and MTNL who also acknowledge this fact and are trying hard to improve the image of their organisation. All said and done, things are not the same as claimed by BSNL. For example, I happened to buy a 3G datacard from BSNL immediately after its gala inauguration in September with a hope to improve my connectivity but was soon disappointed with the actual service that is available. I am also not confident as to how few good officers of BSNL could influence their staff for betterment as desired. However, with a positive mind, I would gather some courage to reach them for some help which they can offer.
Thanks again for your meaningful input anyway.

  • venkatesh

hi every one….I bought 3G datacard from a BSNL franchise(not CSC), this is a good option because we can buy unlocked huawei/micromax etc..,u can easily migrate to other operators(airtel etc.,) when they launch their 3G services, some datacards sold by BSNL are locked to BSNL, (even u can unlock it with the help of xternal sources at an additional cost.. ),
Coming to speeds, its highly variable. as this is the initial stage of 3G lifetime, u would be higher speeds because the fraction of bandwidth u would be getting will be more,as the number of users simultaneouly using 3G at a time is very less…and the speed also depends on the signal strength at a location.

This is happenening because BSNL will be using a fixed air-bandwidth of around 5MHz(i think..) in every cell which consists of 1 base station and ‘x’ number of users who will be using a part of this bandwidth assigned to him dynamically..

We cant complian against bsnl regarding speeds because what they specify is the peak data rate a user will be getting if the entire bandwidth is allocated to a user ..which will occur only if there is a single user in a cell…

    • Arun

A little knowledge is dangerous. Tats all

  • venkatesh

but the customer service of bsnl is worst…we cant even understand the plans properly…

    • Anil Patel

      You are right venkatesh.
I bought a 3g sim 3 month ago only for 3g internet use.I have samsung wave which is 3g handset.

After fil up the form and submiting all documents csc persen told me that internet data plans are not aplicable in 3g handset mobile, you have to purchage the datacard for rs 2500 compulsary to activate any data plans i.e (275,440,606……).

Then after I talk to custemer care atlist 20 times regarding 3g plans with 3g mobile but they are not sure.10 custemercare representative said that yes you can activate any plan in your 3g sim with 3g handset and other 10 said no you have to buy the modem compulsary.so I was so confused but I have activate the 275 rs plan for 1 month i.e 500 mb and now I am using it on my laptop bye conecting my mobile via datacable.

If any one have same doubd I would like to say yes you can use 3g data plan from your mobile also no need to invest rs.2500

Realy the customercare service of bsnl is worst…we cant even understand the plans properly…

    Hi All,

I want to know the download speeds in BSNL’s 3G
card for wireless broadband in Bangalore (preferably near majestic area). In the website and
their shops they say its upto 3.1 to 7.2 Mbps
depending on the type of modem device and area.
Assume we have a device which supports 3.1 Mbps,
and a good coverage, then what can be the download speed…?
Does it come more than 150 to 200 KBps(for file download) in the worst case? What is the lowest speed and best speed

    experienced in your respective areas..?

If possible please reply to my id mohammedbit@gmail.com.

    Thanks in advance.

  • PARITOSH KUMAR

3G data plan (or high speed internet) is applicable for both 3G handset and 3G USB modem. You can use any of them any time and any where. You can select any device which supports 3G(i.e.; HSPA or HSDPA or HSUPA or WCDMA or UMTS 2100).

  • Nagalingam

I have Bsnl Cellone postpaid mobile connection of Rs. 225 per month. Now I am thinking of 3G because I have Nokia N97 mobile. major usage will be internet, chatting, email from mobile. all I need to know is, if I migrate to Bsnl 3G what will be my monthly Rent ?

I read in Bsnl Site for 3G service there is additional rent I guess its Rs 25, still we need to pay for GPRS service ? I saw GPRS is Rs 99 per month.

if anyone who migrated to 3G from Cellone postpaid mobile connection, please let me know how much you paid to migrate and what is your approx monthly bill itemised ?

Greatly appreciate the replies for these. Thanks in advance

    • Divakar

As per the latest tariff the Rs.25 for 3G is waived off. I think on your plan you have 9000secs of local, 3000secs of STD and also 200MB of GPRS and 150MB 3G data usage free per month. Beyond the free usage its 1ps/10KB. If you can give me your mail id I’ll post you the entire tariff sheet.

2.In post-paid send an sms as “amt” to 53444 to know amount of data used and total bill amount till the very last call.

    • Divakar

STV(Special Tariff Voucher) Rs.501 for Unlimited Local and STD on Net for one month and I think its STV of Rs.301(not sure of actual amount) for unlimited Local for one month. Please check the actual amount b4 recharge as its Rs.1 more or less.

  • Hari

    Hi ,
I would like to know the tariff’s available for 3G internet access through BSNL SIM cards.
I need to know the required documents and also the processing time for activation of 3G services?

    • Divakar

      Hi Hari,
First thing would be get a 3G sim card from BSNL for which you need to carry your photo id like passport or DL or Voter ID and a passport sixe photo. Second thing is to select which plan you are interested in either post/pre paid. You can access internet either through your 3G mobile (on mobile or on PC using mobile PC suite, best option) or buy a 3G datacard. If you already have a BSNL sim then
1.If its a 2G sim convert it to 3G by send sms as “M3G120″ to 53733 and confirm the sms you get back as “M3G120 Y” to 53733.
      2. Exchange 2G sim for a 3G sim at BSNL CSCs near your place.
For latest tariff better to check in the CSCs or call the call center.

    sir, i live in kanpur(u.p).i have nokia e63 . I want to use bsnl 3g service.can i use it???

  • Jim, Bangalore

BSNL has started to cheat people. They will give you an unlimited plan and suddenly change into a limited one without informing the customers. My bill came upto Rs20,000 in six days. I took an unlimited plan of Rs1359 in the month of Dec, 2011. Every month I was paying around Rs1800. But in the March, 2011, I was shocked to get a bill of Rs20,000. After enquiring in the BSNL office, they simply said that the plan has changed to 15GB and I have to pay the money. This is pathetic.
