Google rolls out Motion Stills iOS app that creates GIFs from Live Photos

Motion Stills

Google has rolled out an iPhone app that turns Live Photos into GIFs. Dubbed as Motion Stills the app has been developed by Google’s research lab.

The app uses video stabilization technology to freeze the background into a still photo or create sweeping cinematic pans to remove shakiness. In order to keep the background steady while looping, Motion Stills separates the background from the rest of the scene.

Users will first have to create a Live Photo using the native camera app and then you use the Motion Stills app to convert the photo into a steady GIF. These GIFs can then be shared on various social networks and users can even create a movie by combining multiple clips.

According to Google, the new Motion Stills algorithm “uses linear programming to compute a virtual camera path that is optimized to recast videos and bursts as if they were filmed using stabilization equipment, yielding a still background or creating cinematic pans to remove shakiness.”

The Motion Stills app works even without an internet connection and is compatible with an iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, and iPhone SE.
