First “Free app of the Week” goes live on Google Play Store

Google has started offering “Free app of the Week” program on its Play Store. The app this week is Daniel Tiger Grr-ific Feelings by PBS KIDS. This the first time a paid app has gone free on the Play Store.

Google had announced the launch of Family section on Play Store recently. The newly introduced “Family Section” now shows the promo of that reads “New Family Fun”. It is said that the app is valid only for this week and might become paid next week. Prior to this if a developer of a paid app turned it into a free one the Play Store would not allow them to change it back to a paid app. But now Google has not announced any official changes to the policy and the free app deal uses an automatically applied discount code that brings the app’s cost down to zero.

This marks the first time that a paid app has gone free. We will have to wait and see if Google offers a different free app next week as well or is this just a one time thing. The app is available for free download at the Google Play Store.
