Sony ‘s next smartwatch might be made of paper. The company is developing a smartwatch that is fully made of electronic paper, according to a latest report by Bloomberg.

The face and the strap of the smartwatch will be made from the e-ink technology and hence both will act as a display, said the report. E-paper, for those unfamiliar with the term, is the same low-power “electronic paper” display used in devices like the Kindle. It allows a display to be legible, even in direct sunlight, by reflecting light rather than emitting it like a standard LCD display.

The reproted e-paper smartwatch could be running Sony’s custom wearable OS and not Android Wear as Google’s smartwatch OS is not designed for non-LCD panels. Sony decided to use e-paper as it wants to focus on style rather than functionality and wide range of features. The device is reportedly a part of a new Sony program focused on creating innovative new products, which includes a Seed Acceleration Program, added the report.

The report said that the watch is one of the first products to come out of a new division formed by Sony CEO Kaz Hirai. Sony has been losing mobile market share rapidly over the past few months and has taken a bold step to cut down on smartphones in the coming year. Yesterday, the company announced that it is planning to cut down the smartphone lineup by ending the development of new smartphones in China and is reducing the number of Xperia models.

Sony e-paper smartwatch will be ready as early as next year, said the Bloomberg report.
