During the academic gathering, HUAWEI presented an initial look at its upcoming wrist-based ambulatory blood pressure monitor, the HUAWEI WATCH D3, ahead of its scheduled launch event in Munich on September 2.
Evolution of Wrist-Based Blood Pressure Monitoring
HUAWEI’s involvement in health-oriented wearable technology began in 2014, expanding over the last decade from dynamic heart rate and SpO₂ monitoring to electrocardiogram (ECG) collection and direct blood pressure measurement.
- 2021 (HUAWEI WATCH D): Marked the company’s first wrist-based blood pressure monitor, obtaining medical device certifications across several jurisdictions, including the European Union and China.
- 2024 (HUAWEI WATCH D2): Introduced 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) capabilities to a consumer wearable form factor.
- 2026 (HUAWEI WATCH D3): Represents the third iteration in the lineup, designed to expand monitoring capabilities across a wider range of daily scenarios while reducing hardware bulk.
Hardware Specifications and Design Updates
The HUAWEI WATCH D3 incorporates structural adjustments intended to improve comfort during long-term and overnight wear. The device features reductions in case thickness and overall strap weight compared to previous iterations. For its consumer release, HUAWEI confirmed the watch will be available in three colorways inspired by natural palettes.
Expanded Monitoring Scenarios and Regulatory Certification
The device is designed to measure blood pressure across variable physiological states, including during periods of elevated heart rate. Key functional and regulatory aspects include:
- Exercise Tracking: Records baseline and post-exercise blood pressure readings to provide feedback on cardiovascular response and exercise intensity.
- Regulatory Compliance: Certified under the European Union Medical Device Regulation (CE MDR) for single-point blood pressure checks, continuous ambulatory monitoring, and pre-/post-exercise measurements.
- Environmental Alerts: Features automated reminders to take readings during sudden environmental shifts, such as transitions to high altitudes or rapid temperature drops.
- General Wellness Metrics: Includes updated sleep tracking, emotional well-being analysis, and broader “Health Glance” overview indicators.
