Apple has announced the latest iteration of its 14-inch MacBook Pro, featuring the company’s new M6 processor as the successor to last year’s M5 model. The updated laptop introduces architectural improvements focused on multi-threaded compute, graphics rendering, local artificial intelligence workloads, and wireless connectivity.
Available in space black and silver finishes, pre-orders open October 28, with general availability beginning November 6.
M6 Architecture and Hardware Performance
At the core of the updated MacBook Pro is the M6 system-on-chip (SoC). The processor is configured with a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU—each gaining two additional cores over the previous generation—alongside a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and up to 170 GB/s of unified memory bandwidth. The base model ships with 16GB of unified memory, configurable up to 32GB.
According to Apple’s technical disclosures, the M6 delivers specific architectural advancements across several domains:
- Central Processing: The 12-core CPU increases single-threaded and multithreaded performance for compilation and daily productivity. Xcode compilation speeds are rated up to 1.3x faster than the M5 generation and up to 2.5x faster than M1-based models.
- Graphics and Rendering: The 12-core GPU incorporates hardware-accelerated third-generation ray tracing and Dynamic Caching. Apple claims GPU performance is up to 30 percent faster than M5, with Blender ray-traced rendering seeing up to 1.3x gains over M5 and up to 11.7x over M1.
- On-Device Artificial Intelligence: Each GPU core includes dedicated Neural Accelerators, which work in tandem with the Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple states the Neural Engine operates up to 1.9x faster than the M5 counterpart, accelerating on-device tasks such as image upscaling and local large language model (LLM) execution. Time-to-first-token latency during LLM prompt evaluation is rated up to 1.3x faster than M5 and up to 13x faster than M1.
The chassis retains the industrial design of recent MacBook Pro releases while incorporating updated internal components and networking standards:
