Google has announced the rollout of new built-in AI capabilities for Google Chrome users in India. The update also expands availability to Canada and New Zealand. The features are powered by Gemini 3.1 and are designed to help users find information, summarise content and complete tasks directly within the browser.
Expanding Chrome’s AI experiences
Google is expanding Chrome’s AI capabilities to additional regions to support browsing activities such as research, learning and everyday online tasks. The update introduces Gemini in Chrome, an in-browser assistant accessible from the current tab.
Key capabilities include:
- AI browsing assistant: Users can open the Gemini side panel and ask questions without leaving the current webpage.
- Content summarisation: Chrome can summarise long articles, research papers or webpages.
- Task assistance: The AI can generate study material such as quizzes, answer questions or modify content such as recipes.
- Cross-tab comparison: Information from multiple open tabs can be consolidated into a single view, including comparison tables for products.
- Google service integrations: Chrome supports interactions with services such as Gmail, Google Maps, Google Calendar and YouTube directly from the browser.
- Image transformation: Web images can be modified using prompts through Nano Banana 2.
-
Security safeguards: Chrome includes protections designed to detect prompt-injection attempts and requires confirmation before performing actions such as sending emails or adding calendar events.
Built-in AI features coming to Chrome in India
With this expansion, the AI capabilities described above — including Gemini in Chrome — are being made available to users in India through Google Chrome.
As part of the rollout, Chrome is also adding support for more than 50 additional languages, including several Indic languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil, enabling broader access to the AI tools.
Availability and rollout
The new Chrome AI capabilities based on Gemini 3.1 are rolling out starting today to users in India, Canada and New Zealand. The features will first be available on desktop and iOS versions of Chrome. Google said additional AI capabilities and language support will continue to expand to more regions during the year.
Commenting on the launch, Charmaine Dsilva, Director, Product Management for Chrome at Google, said:
The browser is where we get work done, learn new things and connect with the world. With AI built directly into Chrome, we aim to make browsing the web even more intuitive, secure and helpful, while enabling users to have more proactive and intelligent experiences. We’re thrilled for India to be one of the first markets to experience this transformation after the US, underscoring the country’s enthusiasm and potential for shaping the future of AI and emerging technologies globally.
