Android Quick Share to Apple AirDrop file sharing arrives

In a move aimed at simplifying the cross-platform sharing experience, a new compatibility feature allowing Google’s Quick Share on Android to interact directly with Apple’s AirDrop is being introduced. This development addresses long-standing user feedback regarding the difficulty of transferring files between devices running different operating systems.

The core principle behind this integration is the belief that the device a user owns should not be a barrier to sharing moments with family and friends. By enabling Quick Share and AirDrop to communicate, the process of sending files between Android devices and iPhone, iPad or macOS is expected to become significantly easier and more seamless.

Initial Rollout and Security Focus

The feature begins its rollout today, starting with the Pixel 10 family of devices. This initial deployment will be crucial for gathering user feedback and ensuring the feature functions as intended across real-world scenarios, said Google.

A primary consideration in the development of this compatibility has been security. The framework was built with robust safeguards designed to protect user data, and these measures have reportedly been reviewed and tested by independent security experts.

The implementation currently works with AirDrop’s “Everyone for 10 minutes” mode. This connection is direct and peer-to-peer, meaning data is never routed through a server, shared content is never logged, and no extra data is shared. Users must confirm the recipient’s device name on their screen. Google noted that this is just the first step and expressed a desire to work with Apple to enable “Contacts Only” mode in the future.

This cross-platform file sharing compatibility is the latest in a series of initiatives by Google to enhance interoperability—following previous work on the RCS messaging standard and unknown tracker alerts—to meet user demand for better compatibility and safety across ecosystems.

Wide Rollout soon

Google has indicated plans to improve the user experience and expand the feature to a wider range of Android devices following the initial Pixel 10 launch.
