Google on Thursday introduced “Gemini with personalization,” an innovative experimental feature designed to provide tailored responses by linking to users’ Google apps and services.
Gemini with Personalization
Built on the experimental Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model, this feature begins with Google Search integration. With user permission, it leverages past search history to deliver “uniquely insightful” answers that save time, said Dave Citron, Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app. In the coming months, Gemini will connect to Photos, YouTube, and other Google services to offer deeper, preference-based insights.
How It Works
Citron explained that users can enable “Personalization (experimental)” from the Gemini app’s model drop-down menu to link their Search history. When a prompt is entered, Gemini assesses whether past searches can improve the response.
Users have full control and can disconnect this feature at any time. Early testers have praised its help with brainstorming and personalized suggestions, and Google plans to refine it based on user feedback.
Try prompts like:
- “Where should I go on vacation this summer?”
- “I want to start a YouTube channel but need content ideas.”
- “What should I learn as a new hobby or job?”
It’s available now for Gemini and Gemini Advanced subscribers on the web, with a gradual mobile rollout, in over 45 languages across most countries.
Privacy Controls
Google emphasized that users remain in control of their information with robust privacy safeguards:
- Clear notice: Gemini will ask for permission before accessing Search history or other apps.
- Transparency of data sources: The model shows which data sources—like saved info, past chats, or Search history—were used in responses, along with a banner and a disconnect link.
- Access only when “Personalization (experimental)” is selected, permission is granted, and Web & App Activity is enabled. Users can manage their Search history at any time.
More Personalization Options
Users can already share specific interests—like dietary restrictions or partner names—for more natural conversations. Additionally, Advanced subscribers can reference past conversations for contextually richer responses.
New Gemini Features
Citron also highlighted several exciting updates to the Gemini app:
- 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental: Now supports file uploads, boosts speed and efficiency, and offers a 1M token context window for Advanced users to handle more complex tasks.
- Deep Research: Enhanced with the 2.0 model, it now searches the web, synthesizes data, and creates detailed multi-page reports in minutes. Users can see real-time reasoning as Gemini browses. It’s free to try a few times monthly, with Advanced users getting expanded access. Available in 45+ languages worldwide starting March 13, 2025.
Enhanced App Connections
Gemini now links to Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and soon Photos. The 2.0 model can tackle multi-app prompts like finding a YouTube cookie recipe, adding ingredients to a shopping list, and locating nearby stores—all in one request.
In the coming weeks, Photos integration will allow users to create itineraries from their trip photos or retrieve details like driver’s license expiration dates.
Gems for All
Gems allow users to create custom AI experts—for example, a translator, math coach, or meal planner—at no cost. Create them in the “Gems manager” on the desktop, upload files, and interact with them anytime. Premade options are also available. This feature is rolling out globally in the coming weeks across 45+ languages.
Availability
Most features launch today for Gemini and Advanced users, with mobile access and expanded language support coming soon. Deep Research and Gems are free to try, while personalization, file uploads, and the 1M context window are subscriber benefits.
Speaking about the updates, Citron said,
These updates are all designed to make Gemini feel less like a tool and more like a natural extension of you, anticipating your needs with truly personalized assistance.
