iPhone 14 Pro display could feature long pill-shaped cutout

Earlier rumours suggested that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models would have hole-punch and pill-shaped cutouts. While respectable analysts have confirmed this design feature, it is unclear how Apple’s software would integrate the cutouts whenever the iPhone screen is operational.

An anonymous tipper told MacRumors that when the screen is on, the pill and hole cutouts are no longer clearly separate, but instead look like a single, bigger pill shape. These modifications will also contribute to a redesigned version of the Camera app altogether. Well, we are just 6 days away from the Apple iPhone 14 launch event scheduled for September 7.

Another rumours floating around today claims that the iPhone 14 Pro display’s pill- and hole-shaped cuts will be covered by software. In essence, Apple will obscure the space in between the two cutouts. According to Bloomberg, this will create the appearance that it is “one wide pill-shaped cutout.” Apple may have turned off pixels in “dead space” between cutouts to create a consistent pill shape that is less obtrusive when watching information.

The insider also believes Apple will use the blacked-out spaces around cutouts to host content. Apple may make the area broader to fit left and right status icons, or extend it downward into a huge rounded square for specific notifications. This allows Apple to show both the green and orange dots when the camera and microphone are both activated.

The screen will simply display a green dot if an app uses the camera and microphone. Apple promises to let consumers tap on these indications to see which apps use the microphone and camera.

9to5Mac’s insider further adds that Apple plans to restructure the Camera app, so most functions are at the top. Flash and Live Photo buttons are now in the status bar, while photo and video settings are below the display cutouts. Shifting the controls above and into the status bar will provide users a larger camera preview.

Apple has evaluated and planned to deploy these iPhone 14 Pro display enhancements. As software features, they could be updated or removed after final testing. The camera makeover isn’t finalized yet, the article adds. Apple aims to make the dead space between the two cutouts pure black to create the illusion of one continuous cutout.
