Meta rolls out 3D avatars for Facebook, Instagram and Messenger in India

Meta has released updated 3D avatars for Facebook and Messenger in India. The new avatars are much more expressive, flexible, and varied. Meta is adding new facial shapes and devices to help people with disabilities so that they can better represent the untold millions of unique people on the planet.

The new 3D avatars will be available on Facebook and Messenger, as well as Instagram Stories and perhaps even DMs for the first time. Stickers, feed postings, Facebook profile images, and more are now available in India for users to show off their digital selves. Because of this rollout, Instagram will now have avatars for the first time.

Meta put a lot of time and effort into improving its 3D avatars last year. It added new personalization features that let users create more detailed digital versions of themselves. New improvements promise to broaden the platform. Today’s update includes Cochlear implants or over-the-air hearing aids in a range of colors, including VR. For much of 2021, Meta made new eyes, noses, beards, as well as hairstyles, outfits, body types, and much more. Special updates will be introduced to the Avatar editor throughout 2022.

It also offers wheelchair stickers for Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram DMs. Meta will continue to provide more features based on community feedback. Meta is also upgrading the aesthetic of Avatars. Adjustments were made to facial shapes, including skin textures, to make the avatars look realistic.

Commenting on the launch, Meta India Director and Head Partnerships Manish Chopra, said

Avatars are just the first step toward enabling everyone to express themselves in their unique ways. When you create your avatar you can choose the right facial features, body types, clothing styles, and more to create your virtual self. We offered more than one quintillion different combinations when we launched our updated avatars last year, and we’re continuing to add more options to give people even more ways to express themselves.

Commenting on the introduction, Meta General Manager for Avatars and Identity, Aigerim Shorman, said,

We hope your new virtual self enables you to represent yourself online the way you want to be represented—whether that’s to friends and family, your local community, or beyond.
