Google+ Photos to shut down on August 1

Google launched a standalone Google Photos for Android, iOS and desktop at the Google I/O back in May. Today the company has announced that it will be shutting down the existing Google+ Photos app so that users can move to the new Google Photos.

Google will start shutting down the Google+ Photos app for Android from August 1st and will gradually shut down the iOS and Web apps as well. After its shut down, the app will stop working, even though you have the app on your smartphone, but you will still have all your photos and videos saved and available via photos.google.com or for export using Google Takeout, said the company.

To remind you, the new Google Photos app automatically backs up and syncs unlimited photos and videos, with resolution of up to 16MP for photos, and 1080p high-definition for videos. You can download the Google Photos app here.
