Symbian S60 Basics and your smart phone

During the past few years Symbian smartphones have become more popular among youth, when compared with the old days of Symbian devices.Actually the smartphones are made in order to cater a more productive output for power users who tend to rely on their phones to make things easy, keep work well organized and to make sure they are running according to the schedule .But by the time especially after Nokia adapted the multimedia computer concept, Symbian devices changed their path rapidly.

The old but still gold 6630 or the penguin phone as is known among most phone lovers, was the very first Nokia smartphone that hit the markets all around the world, especially among the youth it was a hot cake. That trend which boosted the smartphone fashion has now dominated the youth market as Nokia started including more and more multimedia support, large screens, massive storage capacities, dedicated music controllings, and most of all so many different form factors in design.Though the market is solely driven by looks and multimedia options there is one thing which is not very popular though it is the best in it.The Symbian OS which is core, and the door to all the above features.

I’ve been working with these devices for a quite some time and these are the things which I’ve experienced throughout that time,

1. Most people who use these high end devices don’t even know that they’re using smartphone or a Multimedia Computer.

2. Many do not have an idea about the OS and don’t understand that the mobile phone they are using, runs on a powerful Operating System which can expand the limits of your phone dramatically.

3. I’ve seen so many teens using highend N-series devices like N95,N95 8GB and N82,but they only use them to snap some shots, listen to the music or radio, watching movies and pics, and sometimes to surf the web other than making calls or for texting. So isn’t that a waste of resources and money?

4. Symbian Operating System is a complicated but very productive system with similar functions to windows if used correctly. But sadly many don’t use it at its max and most of the times actually none of the features are used at all.

So as a result of all these things the overall productivity of available resources in these devices are not effectively explored by majority of users. I’ll be starting a series of posts explaining how to get things done easily with this enormous mobile platform in order to make you more familiar with your Symbian smartphone. As the first step let’s get on with the standby screen or the Idle screen.

Some might be thinking what the heck he is up to, we know those, but this is for the people who actually don’t know anything about s60.So here we go,

first on the Idle screen we see some indicators mainly the battery and the signal indicators .And in between them you’ll see the clock, name of your service provider and the details about your current profile or the date. The clock can be displayed either as digital or analog. This little thing can be done by Menu>clock>options>settings>clock type(In some latest devices clock is filed under Application folder). And just below them we see the active standby applications list, and the number of icons appear on this will depend on the screen size and resolution. On both N95 8GB and E71 has 7 application icons,N80 has only 5.And I’ve seen some people are using the default standby applications everyday or not using them at all. When I asked them only I found out that the reason is that they don’t how it is customizable. Oops these then these things are just sitting there on your home screen and filling up your space. So to activate or deactivate the standby screen go to Menu>tools>settings>general>standby mode>active standby and there you can find the application list too. And just below that you can assign left and right selection keys too.

And what you see as No cal.entries allows you to access your calendar quickly and add a to do note or a reminder, so easy way to organize things isn’t it.

Hmm pretty basic, but hope we gotta start from the very basic level and move further. Please leave a comment if anything troubles you.
