Sony have today unveiled an updated version of their Android Wear powered Smartwatch 3 which aims to solve a large criticism leveraged towards the Android Wear device. Announced today, the Smartwatch 3 now comes in a fetching Stainless Steel option which offers an alternative to the rather plain silicone strap version currently available.

Like the original model, the stainless steel Smartwatch 3 sports a 1.6 inch 320×320 TFT LCD Transflective display and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 512MB RAM and 4GB internal storage. It comes equipped with NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 and as we found in the Smartwatch 3 review, the 420 mAh battery offers between one and two days battery life. The stainless steel Smartwatch 3 is IP68 certified offering dust and water resistance and can be charged using a standard microUSB cable without the need for a docking station.

Alongside their new smartwatch, Sony also announced the Smartwatch 3 Holder which “allows users and partners alike to customise SmartWatch 3 with any standard 24mm watch strap”. The use of a proprietary strap on the Smartwatch 3 prevented the use of any standard strap but the holder will now mean you can customise your Smartwatch 3 strap and should also mean we see plenty of third-party straps released.

Sony wasn’t done there however as they also announced that the Lifelog Android lifestyle application would now also be available on the Smartwatch 3. Yasuharu Nomura, Director of Experience Planning at Sony Mobile Communications, said:

“Lifelog is inspiration through insight, and our first partners are helping us bring this to life in new ways. We specifically designed the Lifelog platform on open principles, with capability that will help developers to build new experiences and access the Sony ecosystem like never before – it’s going to be an exciting year ahead.”

The Sony SmartWatch 3 with stainless steel finish will be available across Europe from February 2015.
