Tata Docomo GPRS On Demand overtakes Aircel’s Unlimited Pocket Internet

on January 14, 2010 – 4:47 pm83 Comments

Tata DOCOMO recently launched 5 new GPRS on Demand Packs. At first glance it was still unfortunate that Tata Docomo had yet not launched an Unlimited GPRS much like that of Aircel. However on careful analysis one can say that Tata Docomo has hit all the right notes with these GPRS packs which may ultimately prove to be more beneficial and equally economical for the customers.

As per an analysis the following are the facts:

1)      Tata Docomo Rs. 5 GPRS Pack:  This pack is the first of its kind in the industry, available on demand and seems to be catered for those who are not frequent GPRS users. So if you want to surf the net, suddenly need to check your mail or just chat for a short period of time, this Daily GPRS all you need to do is just send an SMS and it is activated. On Aircel however, a user has no option but to buy a Rs. 15 GPRS pack with a 3 day validity. Although this pack may have Unlimited data Usage, it is practically inconsequential and useless for a user who does not make use of the GPRS facility on a daily basis and also offers very little for a frequent GPRS user due to its mere 3 day validity!

On the other hand Tata Docomo’s ‘pay as you use’ concept does wonders as its Rs. 5 pack (which can be activated via an SMS) comes with a 10 MB data limit and if you exceed that limit you only pay 50paisa/MB (1p/20KB)! Which brings us to our next point

2)      Once you consume the MB/GB data limit on each GPRS pack, Tata Docomo charges you ONLY 50 paisa/MB. This is by far the lowest pulse rate in the industry today and no other operator thus far has matched these rates.

3)      Tata Docomo Rs 48 Monthly GPRS pack:  In this pack Tata Docomo has combined a Day/Night data usage limit. So in the day the data usage limit is 100 MB and the night data usage limit is 2GB. Still the argument remains why would you opt for this pack when Aircel offers an unlimited GPRS pack?? For me the answer is clear:- Aircel offers a Monthly GPRS Unlimited data pack for Rs. 98 while Tata Docomo offers it for Rs. 48 (less than half of Aircel)! Yes, Tata Docomo’s pack may not be Unlimited however with a day data limit of 100 MB and a night limit of 2GB it is extremely unlikely that an average GPRS user (or an above average one for that matter) will ever exceed this limit. If a user does however exceed it then he only pays 50paisa/MB on any extra browsing within the validity period. So why pay Rs. 98 for an Unlimited Pack when you can pay less than half that amount for a Tata Docomo GPRS Monthly pack and avail of free browsing data which is almost as good as unlimited?!

4)      Since Aircel has introduced their Unlimited GPRS packs, they have experienced immense network congestion which has led to extremely slow browsing  speeds. This proves that an unlimited GPRS pack may not be as beneficial or rather as convenient as one may feel. On the other hand for with Tata DOCOMO’s ‘pay as you use’ Monthly GPRS pack, you not only save money but you also get a high quality browsing experience due to lack of congestion.

I don’t agree with this article. Day by day mobile Internet usage will grow and mobile operator should manage the traffic and upgrade the capacity of their network so that customers may not feel slowness.

Near future unlimited mobile Internet user will grow faster than DSL and operators have to handle it not blaming it for network congestion

    DoCoMo rockzzzzzzzzzz..

I wish Airtel should read this article…. and learn…

I am Have an Airtel Connection and Unlimited Internet Usage costs 499 Rs

  • TIPPU2

i dont agree, with aircel its better to download no time limit in docomo night has more data free which is of no use and some time due errors thier may be chance of deduction of balance ,so its better to use aircel particularly in my state karnataka , aircel still remains cheapest gprs provider……………..instead of docomo reliance has healthy plans …………….just also go through it since its gprs is awesone ………………….no match for it ………

  • Johnpaul

I got a surprise offer from Airtel. I can Now use the Gprs for 3 Months Absolutely free with a data limit of 100 Mb/Month and additional usage will cost 20 paisa for 50 kb. When i called the customercare they said its true because i bought a 5800 xpressmusic and its offer from Nokia and Airtel. And browsing speed was beyond my expectation and i downloaded over 40 applications from ovistore. Thanks Nokia and Airtel. And in terms of spped Noone can beat Airtel.Believe me because i Have aircel and Docomo connection also and they are not even closer to airtel Gprs. And did Anybody get this offer?

  • sunil

i think it is better to use vodafone or aircelll .which can use uninterupted internet browsing full day…around 100/-rs..in rs 48/-&day usage of 100mb /day.. too difficult

  • Aman Dutt

We carry a generalized notion that if a data pack isn’t offering unlimited data usage, it doesn’t culminates into a productive deal. This may or may not be true for Broadband service but its not of similar significance in GPRS data plans.

I feel we got specific sort of data usage on phone as its known fact we haven’t got full web browser like experience on our phone’s as yet though its not a distant possibility at all as mobile phone manufacturers are already developing new platforms/OS like Maemo to envisage complete web browsing on hand-held devices(phone’s). Until & unless such phone’s hit the deck, our mobile phone data usage can broadly be classified as under: -

1.) Day usage: – It can mainly comprise of checking & sending important emails (Note: – Remember intensive mobile email users will invariably prefer Blackberry client). Apart from that it can be used for occasional usage on social networking sites.
2.) Night usage: – Since we return home usually in evening & after dinner we get ourselves glued on phone. This is the time usually for downloading clips, tracks & images etc. Also we utilize this time for browsing favourite websites.
This model works not only for professionals but also for students now a days. Though I’ll accept it may not suit everyone’s routine but most people will fall under said category.

What I’m trying to say is 2 GB usage in night & 100 MB at night is just sufficient & may well serve the purpose of unlimited data usage on our mobile phone. I can also bank my opinion upon my vast experience using mobile broadband connections. I have been using GPRS since ages & reckon myself being one of the very first to try ‘n’ use 3G in India. As far as question of increase of mobile broadband usage is concerned, it will possibly spread it wings in two dimensions i.e
    (a) Increase in number of subscribers.
    (b) Increase in data usage per subscriber.

Its beyond any doubt that point (a) would comprehensively outperform point (b) as eminent driver in said growth. If still someone’s has got any apprehension about it than I’ve already described limitation for web browsing upon mobile handsets in early part of my reply.

Thus I feel it becomes imperative to choose a network carrier which can handle sudden bulk growth in subscribers due to lucrative data plans on unveil. Patterns of data plans may or may not play any role in congestion in the end.

i think aircel is much better than tata docomo’s this plan becoz
    now unlimited user’s growing fastly……..
docomo must launch unlimited internet plans.

IDEA & VODAFONE walon ko bhagwaan hi bachaye.nahi to naam bhi log bhul jayenge.

  • Anonymous

Aircel is much better than docomo, however speed is slow bt its ok,i m using it with tcp ip software . . . . .

  • saikiran

Reliance also has the same plan better than Docomo there is no activation charge or any thing just we have to pay 50pise/per MB..
i think its better than docomo because in docomo activation charge is Rs:5 and they give 10Mb limit
    0.50pise X 10MB = 5Rs
hence by the above calculation it is clear the take 50pise per MB ..
But in reliance its just 50pise per MB no activation or Nothing ….
so we can save 5Rs …

  • kri$

no dear i didnt get it !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Shiva’Z

    Dis z wat I waz waiting 4.
    Thnxxx DOCOMO!!

  • ritesh

does any one know how to chek the remaining mb ib docomo….thanks anyway

  • CAS

a)Does 100MB/day mean to complete a quota of 100 MB of day time usage over a period of one month(ie untill validity)?
    or
b)it means we get 100MB x 30days = 3000 MB of day usage time per month?

(and the same query is for the 2gb nite usage)

if b)is an option to choose than there is nothing better than docomo..
cz an avg broadband user cant download more than 2gb/night, gprs is out of the question to exceed such a limit..

but if a)is an option to choose aircel is better

  • JISH

Tata docomo INTERNET / GPRS is NOW very slow(time waste).

  • aashu

    Aircel plan still on top

  • Omkar

tata docomo gprs pack can be accesed via PC but aircel unlimited is only for mobile usage. They charge if u connect trhe intenet vai PC

  • Arjun

    Hello
Docomo is a Utterflop Service in India and Pathetic Service than Aircel. This is Introduced For Publicity only

  • Jerrin

    In my opinion aircel has
    1.Unlimited data usage.
2.Edge supported network(airtel, idea, vodafone dont have edge support everywhere).
3.Cheaper option than broadband and mobile broadband.
4.Unlimited for Rs97(while airtel for Rs.474 and the rest dont even have an unlimited plan).
But due to the immense data traffic on network the connection is too slow in the evening.
So i sincerly urge aircel to upgrade their infrastrucure to handle this traffic.

  • Jerrin

I am writing this reply using an aircel unlimited connection on my laptop using my phone as the modem.

  • ARJUN

    Hi
AIRCEL GIVES HIGH SPEED GPRS NETWORK ON MY MOBILE AND AS WELL AS MY COMPUTER BUT IF YOUR MOBILE CONTAINED WITH EDGE TECHNOLOGY. BUT TATA DOCOMO IS A NEW ENTRANT IN INDIA AND HAS LOST ITS FAME WITHIN 6 MONTHS

  • ARJUN.C

AIRCEL PLANS ARE TOPPER ONE. Better Buy Aircel

  • Yuvraj Rana

How can we compare the difference in speed between Aircel pocket internet and Tata Docomo’s (TD). If there is any difference then do let me know because i am planning to go for TD. I am residing at Darjeeling and i dont see any tower of TD, how can it be as good as Aircel in respect to browsing to net, as Aircel gives a speed of up to 115 kbps and TD of 28 kbps.

  • Vineeth

I tried to configure their (DOCOMO’s) GPRS on my new ACER E200 smartphone… And their customer service is the worst I have ever seen…

  • m.siba sankar

    U R right

  • ARJUN.C

Pls don’t buy the GSM AND CDMA SERVICES OF RELIANCE AND TATA TELESERVICES. Because they are even worse than BSNL Mobile. So Particularly In all over India use Aircel. Because Aircel has Best Quality Network. But Except Some silly mistakes, Aircel is a Best one.

  • Mahadev

I have Airtel and Docomo network Gprs plan. Same time and taken speed test and result is TATA DOCOMO Speed is faster than Air tel.

  • http://none Sam

    Hi Writer(of the blog),

TATA DOCOMO’S GPRS on Demand… Its just a service for new beginners to check the speed of the internet connection on there mobile nothing else…
I’m a student and have to be on the messenger all the time for obvious reasons and if say i have a snap (2mb file) of my friend which i have to attach and send it via email then i wont be able to do so…
The main point being that if you opt for Internet Service which is not truly UNLIMITED then you’ll always endup Paying a LOT…..

    P.S :
    Mobile : 5800 Express Music.
    Location : Pune.
My monthy usage is around 5 – 6 GB’s using Aircel’s Unlimited Internet ( Download speed 20 to 40 kb/s ) and i browse as per my convenience and/or requirement dont have to wait for night to use internet like other nightplans force us to do.

  • shwetha ramachandran

I’m a docomo user, i want to activate my internet and i need to have sufficient balance in my mobile to activate it. How to do recharges in online. can any one help me?

  • James

Tata cannot beat AIRCEL, can u watch streaming video with tata(bye)?, which is quite data intensive.(100mb sucks). U can stay online forever with aircel 98 for e-mails and other data intensive operations like live tv, online gaming… U have missed all these things in your post. Unlimited means freedom, like democracy. Plus u can connect with your laptop forever, no headache. U dont have calculate your data rate 100mb-20m-15m-….=0

    but for me,

    (_AIRCEL_ROCKZZZ_)

  • assam guy

I am from Assam and i am using BSNL GPRS unlimited with the Rs 725 rental which includes unlimited BSNL to BSNL calls and messages across north east as well. My phone is a Samsung Corby Plus and i connect to the net via bluetooth to a Sony Vaio laptop and nowadays the speed is constant around 10kb per second while at night its around 12-14 kb which is the maximum constant speed. Its very good for surfing in pc but a little cumbersome for downloading. But still i am able to download 200MB in around 7 to 8 hours (while i sleep). I am downloading at least 6GB per month which is quite decent for GPRS i think. I can download a maximum of 15GB per month but in that case my phone will be unreachable 24 hrs as it always shows phone out of reach when i am connected to the internet!!

  • ankur

i want to know that in rs 98 unlimited gprs plan if i connect my mobile to pc and then i download songs from songs.pk or download software from any site like softpedia.com or download anything by torrent then i will charged?

  • JASIN JAMAL

    M jasin 4m kerala… used both tata docomo & aircel…. i vote 4 taTA 6 GB for 96… coz i get an average f 20 kbps{bytes) which is quite impressive……… aircel offrz speed 7 to d maximum & 3 @ nyt…
i managed 2 finish 6 gb in jst 4 days!!!!!!! ie to download a 700 mb movie in aircel takes 40 hourz bt its jst 9 houtz in docomo…

  • Aniruddha Kalburgi

Fuck of this Aircel’s GPRS department. Hell services they are providing. They only make challenges of solving the problems but they never solved. I always reported this to them at least 4 times in month. Doing same from 7 month but no-buddy’s listening.

Aircel you just sit on the sheet of the hell… This is time to use Tata Docomo…

  • Souvik

Please do not buy aircel or docomo, buy airtel which will give you 30-40 kb (internet download manager)which is excellent compared to other operators.

  • Kamlesh

I hv corby plus i m using tata docomo nd airtel both but i vote for docomo cos it gives more speed dan any comuniction…
i hope u mind to hv only cos i hv experienced…

  • DHANANJAY aDITYA

i am also getting thru aircel in maharashtra. what abt docomo?

  • Irfan

Hi…I am using docomo and it gives a download speed from 25-50 kbps and there is no limit of 100 mb in day,i have downloaded more than 300 mb in a day without any extra charges, aircel also gives same speed dut i think for frequent users docomo is cheaper than aircel.
so i will say that docomo is best(use DAP it will increase ur download speed)……….

  • kuiver

    heya,
the net speed vary accd.to the location also .i’ve been using aircel, vodafone ,and money sucking airtel.in delhi airtel and vodafone doinga bit better in north campus.and aircel rocks in south delhi.plus vodafone and airtel only gives wap which some apps wouldnt work.but aircel unlimited means unlimited .everything for free!

I’m using DOCOMO GPRS with Nokia 5230 and Laptop in Mumbai – Bandra to Churchgate area which works very fine n smooth.
As per my experience, it is better than AIRCEL, AIRTEL, MTNL, VODA.
Thanks to Hon. Shri Ratan Tata.
    Good Wishes!

“data limit of 100 MB and a night limit of 2GB it is extremely unlikely that an average GPRS user (or an above average one for that matter) will ever exceed this limit.”

I disagree with this. I’m using Aircel GPRS for over an year and my monthly usage on phone comes to around 10-12Gb on average. My phone is Nokia N95 8Gb and I’m utilizing the Aircel GPRS pack to its fullest. I use skype for free calling, youtube, torrent downloading app etc..So I cant think of any other GPRS providers other than aircel..

  • Arindam

Only Aircel Offers Unlimited GPRS and also in very cheap price.
Without unlimited plans internet surfing and downloading cannot be done in care free mind!
So until any other unlimited internet service schemes come into market I think Aircel is the best GPRS plans are best for all!

I am really satisfy with Aircel!

  • Hari

    Dear frieds,
I known that ARICEl is best GPRS pack and offers but the NWK is good, if NWK is not good means how you people ll browse, according to me DOCOMO is the best

  • http://www.facebook.com/50shashwat Shashwat

TATA DOCOMO huh what a goddamn internet speed it offers.
Previously it was 28 kbps but now when they increased charges , they went it on decreasing its speed.
AND now it has reached to min. 800 bytes/s to max 3kbps… What the hell is this….. Atleast aircel provides 8kbps…..

  • Sandeepverma1992

I perched new AIRCEL sim today. It’s internet speed is same as TATA DOCOMO’s speed in my area (Raipur, C.G), But in AIRCEl, internet Disconnect Automatically.
So for this solution What can I do ?

  • Deepak

thats right bro  i recently returned from new zealand there the ppl used to get normal speed of 40 to 45 kbps even wid a dial up connexion……. in india its terrible ppl r gettin speed like 5 kbps 3kbps pissed of men telecom comp in india sucks and exploits d people they r looting common ppl
