“Great to see that Gmail App on Android just crossed 1 billion installs, wrote Google’s Sundar Pichai revealed today on his Google+ page. This is the first time an app from the Google Play Store has reached such heights.  The Google Play Services app is technically the app which crossed the 1 billion mark in January. It must be noted that the app is pre-installed on Android devices above 2.2 for OEMs who have partnered with Google for Google mobile services (GMS).

Gmail’s app download tally counts the total number of unique accounts, not the total number of downloads and devices using the app, as per Android Police report. It further said that Gmail had 425 million active monthly users in 2012, and that number has multiplied by the growing popularity of Android. Google Search, Facebook and Google Maps are some of the apps in the 500 million to one billion install range.

Earlier last week, leaked images of a Gmail revamp on web had surfaced online. It is not clear if we can expect a revamp for the Gmail Android app at the Google I/O next month.
