Mozilla has started rolling out Firefox FX 157 with a refreshed design across desktop and mobile. The update changes the browser’s visual language while retaining its existing open-source and privacy-focused foundation.
A more modern Firefox
Mozilla previously described its design direction for Firefox as wanting it to feel “current, but not generic. Warm, but still precise.” That design approach now extends across the browser, with refreshed colors, icons and themes covering tabs, toolbars, the New Tab page, Private Browsing and other parts of the interface.
The shared design language across desktop and mobile provides a consistent foundation for new features and experiences. At the same time, Mozilla said the visual changes come with no cost to browser performance.
New Firefox features
The browser now offers more choices for how the browser looks and works. The main changes include:
- Compact Mode: Reduces the size of tabs and the toolbar to give more screen space to webpages. An auto-compact option is also available for smaller screens. Mozilla brought the mode back following user requests.
- Theme picker: Makes it easier to explore different Firefox looks, with new themes and wallpapers available to choose from.
- New Tab customization: Lets users choose what appears on the homepage and provides a dedicated space to pin and organize shortcuts so frequently used sites stay in place.
- AI controls: Let users choose which AI features appear in Firefox, select the model they want to use, and decide what context those features have access to.
Firefox keeps its existing foundation
The refreshed design does not change Firefox’s independent and open-source nature. Mozilla said the browser continues to include built-in privacy protections and controls that let users decide how Firefox works.
Mozilla described the current Firefox design as a renewal based on the same principles that have shaped the browser from the beginning, with the new design providing a foundation for carrying Firefox forward.

The update is rolling out to everyone using Firefox across desktop and mobile devices.
