Google expands support for changing Gmail address with gradual rollout

Google is rolling out a feature that allows eligible users to change their Google Account email address, including the Gmail username (the part before @gmail.com). This update enables users to update their digital identity while continuing to access services like Gmail, Drive, Photos, and more without losing stored data.

Change your Google Account username — what the feature does

Users can update their Google Account email to a new Gmail address. After the change:

  • The new email becomes the primary sign-in identity
  • Emails sent to both old and new addresses are delivered to the same inbox
  • Account data such as emails, photos, and files remains unchanged
  • The previous Gmail address becomes an alternate email
Important things to know before changing email
  • The new Gmail username must be unique and not previously used or reserved
  • Some Google services and device-based features may be affected
  • Devices like Chromebooks and services such as Chrome Remote Desktop may require reconfiguration
  • Sign-in methods using Google on third-party platforms may be impacted
  • Some app settings may reset after the update
  • Backing up important data is recommended before making changes

How to change your Google Account email (all devices)

The process is consistent across computer, Android, and iOS:

  1. Open your Google Account settings in a browser
  2. Go to Personal info
  3. Select Email → Google Account email
  4. Tap or click Change Google Account email (if available)
  5. Enter a new Gmail username
  6. Confirm the change and follow the on-screen instructions
Limitations

Changing your Google Account email comes with certain restrictions:

  • The old Gmail address remains permanently associated as an alternate email and cannot be removed or reused
  • Users can switch back to a previous email at any time
  • New Gmail usernames must be unique and available
  • A Google Account can create up to three new Gmail addresses in total
  • Users can create a new Gmail address only once every 12 months
  • Existing account data remains unchanged
  • Some older records, such as calendar events, may still display the previous email address

Emails sent to both the old and new addresses continue to arrive in the same inbox, and users can sign in using either email.

Availability

The ability to change a username is available now for all Google Account users in the U.S. The feature is being gradually rolled out to other users, and availability may vary depending on account eligibility, region, and rollout status.
