Truecaller Family Protection launched in India to address evolving digital scams

Truecaller has announced the launch of its “Family Protection” feature in India to combat the rise of complex online scams, including digital arrests, impersonation fraud, and AI voice cloning. The rollout follows the feature’s introduction in several international markets, such as Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya.

The update marks a shift for the platform from individual caller identification to a broader, household-wide security model aimed at mitigating financial and security threats.

The “Family CTO” Model

The Family Protection service is structured around a centralized administration model. It allows one tech-literate family member to act as the group’s “chief technology officer” (CTO) or administrator. This designated individual is equipped with tools to monitor and manage the digital safety of the rest of the household, particularly targeting the protection of elderly relatives and children who may be more vulnerable to predatory scams.

Key Features and Capabilities

The core Family Protection suite is free to use and operates seamlessly across both Android and iOS devices. The primary tools available to the designated administrator include:

  • Real-Time Fraud Alerts: The admin receives immediate notifications if a family member is targeted by a flagged or suspicious number.
  • Remote Call Hang-Up: A central feature that allows the administrator to instantly disconnect an active, suspicious call on behalf of any group member.
  • Shared Block Lists: The ability to synchronize blocked numbers across all devices in the family network.
  • Safety Dashboard: A centralized hub for the admin to monitor and manage device safety settings and customize security levels for individual members.
Privacy and Premium Tiers

According to Truecaller, the system is built on a “safety without surveillance” framework. While security alerts and block lists are shared to protect the group, individual privacy boundaries remain intact. Family members—including the administrator—cannot access each other’s personal data, text messages, or call logs.

While the base Family Protection feature is free, administrators have the option to upgrade to a Premium Family Plan subscription. This paid tier expands access to a broader suite of advanced Truecaller safety features for every member of the group.

As digital adoption continues to grow rapidly in India, the new feature aims to centralize defense mechanisms against modern digital fraud, placing proactive tools directly in the hands of a household’s most trusted user.

Commenting on the launch, Rishit Jhunjhunwala, CEO, Truecaller, said:

Just knowing who is calling is no longer enough. Today, the real question is whether the call is safe to answer. As scams become more sophisticated and emotionally manipulative, protection needs to move beyond the individual to the entire household. With Family Protection in India, we’re empowering the most digitally aware member of the family to act as a safety anchor, helping ensure that everyone in their circle benefits from the same level of trusted communication.
