Sony India has announced the launch of the RX1R III, the third iteration in its acclaimed line of compact full-frame cameras. The new model integrates a 61-megapixel 35 mm full-frame Exmor R™ CMOS image sensor with the latest BIONZ XR™ image processing engine and a fixed ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35 mm F2 lens.
High-Resolution Imaging and Optics
At the core of the RX1R III is the 61-megapixel back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, which, paired with the BIONZ XR™ processor, aims to deliver high-resolution images with a wide dynamic range and low noise. To maximize image sharpness, the sensor’s surface features an Anti-Reflection (AR) coating, and the camera is designed without an optical low-pass filter. The integrated ZEISS® Sonnar T* 35 mm F2 lens has been optically matched to the sensor to maintain high performance within the camera’s compact body.
Advanced Autofocus and Creative Flexibility
The RX1R III incorporates an AI processing unit, a feature found in Sony’s professional Alpha™ series cameras. This unit enables advanced subject recognition, tracking human eyes, bodies, and heads with high precision for both still photography and video recording, even when the subject’s face is partially obscured. The camera’s autofocus system utilizes up to 693 phase-detection AF points, covering approximately 78% of the image sensor area for still images.
While the camera has a fixed 35 mm lens, the “Step Crop Shooting” function offers digital focal length versatility, allowing users to switch between 35 mm, 50 mm, and 70 mm equivalent fields of view. For RAW shooters, the focal length can be reselected during post-production. A dedicated macro ring on the lens allows for close-up photography, with a minimum focusing distance of 20 cm. The camera also includes twelve built-in “Creative Looks” that provide pre-set color profiles for both photos and videos.
Design, Ergonomics, and Hardware
The RX1R III is constructed from a lightweight magnesium alloy. Its design features embedded dials and a Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe, contributing to a flat top surface. The grip has been designed for a secure hold. For composition, the camera is equipped with a 2.36 million-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, offering approximately 0.70x magnification.
The camera is powered by the NP-FW50 rechargeable battery, rated for up to 300 still images on a single charge. It includes a USB Type-C® port that supports USB Power Delivery for fast charging and can be powered by external sources for extended use.
Corporate Responsibility and Accessibility
In line with Sony’s ‘Road to Zero’ environmental plan, the RX1R III is produced in facilities operating on 100% renewable electricity. Its packaging utilizes Sony’s Original Blended Material, foregoing plastic. For accessibility, the camera includes features such as a Screen Reader function and Display Magnification to assist visually impaired users.
Optional Accessories
Sony also announced several dedicated accessories for the RX1R III:
- TG-2: A thumb grip that attaches to the MI Shoe for enhanced stability.
- LCS-RXL: A custom-fit body case designed to protect the camera while allowing access to all ports and controls.
- LHP-1: An aluminum lens hood with a bayonet mount for protection and quick attachment.
Price and Availability
The Sony RX1R III is priced at an MRP of Rs. 4,69,990 and will be sold through Sony Authorised Retail Outlets, Sony Camera Lounges, Alpha Flagship stores, Sony Centers, the ShopatSC.com portal, and major e-commerce platforms.
