Google brings Gemini to Google TV with expanded capabilities

Google has introduced Gemini for TV, extending its AI capabilities to the big screen. The update builds on Google Assistant, allowing not just commands but free-flowing conversations with Google TV.

Shalini GovilPai, VP of Google TV, explained that Gemini can help with entertainment choices, planning trips, or answering complex questions. Users can start by speaking “Hey Google” or holding the mic button on the TV remote.

Smarter Entertainment Discovery

Gemini makes finding content easier through natural conversations:

  • Group viewing: “Find me something to watch with my wife. I like dramas, but she likes lighthearted comedies.”
  • Quick summaries: “What happened in the last season of Outlander?”
  • Vague searches: “What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?” Gemini may suggest options like The Pitt.
  • Follow-up insights: “What are the reviews for The Pitt?” before making a choice.

Learning and Skills on TV

The AI also turns the TV into an interactive learning space:

  • School help: “Explain why volcanoes erupt to my third grader” followed by “How do I make a model volcano?”
  • Skill building: “How do I learn guitar as a beginner?”
  • Cooking ideas: “What’s a dessert I can make in less than an hour?”

Responses are paired with YouTube videos for deeper understanding.

Availability

Gemini is available starting today on the TCL QM9K series. Later in 2025, it will expand to:

  • Google TV Streamer
  • Walmart onn. 4K Pro
  • Hisense U7, U8, and UX (2025 models)
  • TCL QM7K, QM8K, and X11K (2025 models)

GovilPai noted that more Gemini features for TV are planned in the future.
