Apple working on next-gen battery for 2025: Report


Apple is ramping up its R&D efforts, aiming to revolutionize battery technology. A recent ETnews report reveals Apple’s plan to introduce a next-gen battery to the market by 2025. The tech giant is directly involved in developing crucial battery components, including cathode and anode materials, with the goal of surpassing current solutions.

The cathode material, a critical factor in battery performance, is being reimagined with a novel composition combining raw materials like nickel, cobalt, manganese, and aluminum to improve energy density, output, and stability.

Additionally, Apple is exploring carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as conductive materials to enhance battery performance. CNTs have gained attention for their ability to boost battery performance with a smaller quantity than conventional conductive materials.

Furthermore, Apple is working on anode materials with a higher silicon content. Replacing graphite with silicon can increase battery capacity and reduce charging times, although silicon expansion during charge and discharge is a known challenge. It appears Apple has developed technology to overcome this issue.

Apple’s battery innovation spans from materials to the final product, aiming to create a battery not yet seen in the market. The growing demand for high-performance batteries driven by the metaverse and mixed reality (MR) appears to be a significant motivation for this endeavor.
