Twitter shuts down experimental app twttr; turns off threaded replies

Micro-blogging site Twitter has been experimenting with threaded replies for some time now. However, due to users’ feedback, the company has decided to stop implementing it owing to the difficulty in reading and joining the conversations.

“We asked and you let us know this reply layout wasn’t it, as it was harder to read and join conversations,” the company wrote in a tweet published today. “So we’ve turned off this format to work on other ways to improve conversations on Twitter.”

Also, the company announced that it is shutting down its beta app – twttr, where various experiments like threaded replies are conducted. “For now we’re turning [twttr] off so we can work on new tests to improve the conversation experience on Twitter,” the company said in another tweet. It’s worth mentioning that, people currently using twttr will lose access for now, according to the company.

While this feature has been stopped, Twitter has started showing warning who tries to like or retweet a labeled tweet. Twitter began showing a warning before the 2020 US presidential election when users tried to retweet a flagged tweet.

Now the company has rolled out the warning functionality on the web and iOS globally this week. For Android, it will be rolled out very soon, claims Twitter.

From now, when you try to like or retweet a message, you will get a pop-up from Twitter claiming “This is disputed”. However, it will not stop you from posting but just a sign of warning. Users can proceed despite the warning too.
