POCO X2 users not able to unlock Bootloader [Update: Issue fixed]

[Mar 2, 2020]: POCO team has resolved the issue and POCO X2 users can now successfully bind their Mi account to the device for unlocking the bootloader.

[Feb 18, 2020]: POCO made a comeback in the Indian market as an independent brand and introduced the POCO X2 (codename ‘pheonixin’), its first mid-range smartphone in the new X series in India earlier this month. POCO F1, the very first device from the brand had great development support and as a result, we have tons of custom ROMs and mods available for the device.

POCO India GM, C Manmohan, during the POCO X2 launch announced that the kernel sources for the device will be available on the launch day and the company delivered on the promise. Last week, the company also sent devices to a few developers so that they can kick start development for POCO X2.

To those unaware, a custom recovery is required in order to flash a custom ROM and unlocked bootloader is required to flash a custom recovery and to unlock bootloader you need to obtain permission from Xiaomi, to sum it up, it’s a tedious and time taking process.

Usually, Xiaomi users need to wait for 15 days after signing in and binding the account to unlock the bootloader but for POCO users the wait time is just 3 days. We were trying to unlock the bootloader of our POCO X2 which is a retail unit, but while binding account to the device, we got a pop-up, ‘Couldn’t add. Error code:86023’.

On digging further, we found this XDA post by Amulya, who received POCO X2 from the company for the development, saying that he is also facing the same error. It’s not just him and me who are facing the error, the post has multiple confirmations from POCO X2 users, so POCO X2 third-party development may not have started yet despite these developers having the device. A POCO executive in response to the query said that ‘We’re working on it.’ Check out our POCO X2 Review in case you’re considering to purchase one.
