F-Secure has just posted about a new new SMS worm / virus which is targeting Symbian phones . The SMS Worms are on the loose in China and known as Trojan:SymbOS/MerogoSMS. This virus is mainly targeting Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition phones.
The worm spreads through SMS and the receiver will get a message in Chinese with a link in it . Once the user clicks on the link , it will download and install an app and start spreading the virus.
The virus is designed to spread through SMS and send messages to premium rate numbers which might cost the user a bombshell. The app is actually a signed one and acts as if it’s a legitimate one. The Symbian Foundation has reportedly revoked the license of publisher ID used to the package the app. Although the infection is limited to China for now, make sure you don’t open any unknown SMS written in Chinese.
