Texas Instruments not abandoning OMAP yet, OMAP 5 expected early 2013

Earlier this week Reuters reported that Texas Instruments plans to concentrate more on embedded chip business than the smartphone and tablet business. Now, in a statement sent to GSMArena, TI said that they are not abandoning but broadening the reach of its OMAP products, aiming at embedded applications such as automotive, industrial, enterprise communication, vision and robotics.

TI has also revealed that the OMAP 5 chips with 2.0 GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 SoC that was announced back in 2011 is expected to be available in consumer products in early 2013. The OMAP 5 would also include POWERVR SGX544-MPx graphics for better gaming performance. The current-gen OMAP 4 chip powers several devices including Motorola Smartphones, Kindle Tablets, BlackBerry Playbook and several other devices.

There are no details about the future for TI, beyond OMAP 5. It is really a tough time for TI when Qualcomm has integrated LTE chips, quad-core processors, while Apple and Samsung are selling devices with their own chips. Let’s wait till next year to check out how dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPUs will perform.
