Instagram is said to be testing a feature that will let users post Instagram stories directly to WhatsApp. Like rest of the WhatsApp, an Instagram story posted as WhatsApp status becomes encrypted and disappears after 24 hours.

The feature is currently in testing with a small group of users and it is based on publicly available code which is made available by WhatsApp for third-party apps to integrate WhatsApp messaging.

In this feature, users will an get an option to share to WhatsApp from the Instagram sharing screen and will have to press “send” in WhatsApp app to post the story. An Instagram story posted as WhatsApp status will have an Instagram icon on the bottom.

This move might add more functionality and also increase the usage of Instagram which as of last June were outstripped Snapchat. As of November, there were more than 300 million daily active users of Instagram Stories. Adding WhatsApp sharing ability will boost the traffic of Instagram stories especially in countries where WhatsApp is very popular. This will also indirectly boost the usage of WhatsApp status feature which currently enjoys 300 million active users daily.

Since the feature is currently under testing, we’re not sure when it might be available for a global roll out or will it ever see the light in the day is something needs to be seen.
