With an aim to tap the growing smartphone market in India, Cyanogen is looking forward to open an office in the country. The company which is a developer of an open-source mobile operating system will set up an office in either Bangalore or Delhi in next three months.
Cyanogen is planning to hire talent for the new office in the country. In addition, the US based company is also keen on acquiring start-ups. The company’s plans about opening office in India were confirmed by Vikram Natarajan, senior vice-president of global partnerships and distribution at Cyanogen. At the beginning, it is eyeing as much as 50 new members for its upcoming office in the country.
Cyanogen secured $80 million in funding in March from Premji Invest soon after its was was reported that the company raised $110 million. Natrajan added that the 50-member team will represent a third of the company’s current employee base. The Indian team is will work on products, bring in local flavors to the operating system, along with doing testing and quality assurance.
The company is planning to target the effervescent Indian smartphone market that will have phones running on an alternative OS other than Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows. Cyanogen Inc. partnered with OnePlus last year for the OnePlus One, which is the first official Cyanogen OS smartphone. Micromax’s YU partnered with Cyanogen few months back to use the OS in their YU series of smartphones starting with YU YUREKA in India.
