Apple Sues HTC over infringment of 20 patents

on March 3, 2010 – 12:01 am3 Comments

The patent wars are getting ugly again . After suing Nokia in response to the Finnish phone makers claim , the Cupertino, California based company is now suing HTC for alleged infringement of 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone

Looks like this move is directed more at Android than HTC , we’ll have more on that soon.

Seems like Apple is not amused by the fast rise of Android in the US market. Wish Apple spent more time on  improving their distribution network (India still does not have the 3GS) or getting better names of their products

(iPad ) or eliminating child labor in it’s manufacturing facilities !

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

Here is the statement from Apple

Wow!! Just coz the 3GS isnt in India, Apple doesnt have a good distribution system? Did they achieve a 25% market share of the American smartphone market without good distribution? Agreed they havent concentrated on India at all, but how does that become a poor distribution system?

Secondly, child labour isnt being used in their own manufacturing facility. Thats in an outsourced factory. Have a walk around Nokia’s very own unit in Tamil Nadu and you’ll see a fair amount of child labour within the walls of the factory. Or is this a case of “it isnt reported so it isnt happening”

Lastly, go through the lawsuit documents in detail. They are directed more at HTC’s “own inventions” like the Sense UI rather than android. Conglomerates like Apple, Nokia, HTC, etc dont file lawsuits just coz they’re getting bored. If the patent violations were within Google Android, Apple’s legal board would have enough sense to fight Google instead of HTC.

Am i sounding too much of an “Apple Fanboy?”. Thats coz i am. Not coz I love Apple. But because of how one single stand-alone phone from Apple has shaken the foundations of the smartphone market by grabbing a full quarter of the market share. And being the owner of an iPhone 3G and a HTC HD2, I can clearly see how hard HTC is trying to emulate Apple by using the iPhone as a yardstick instead of setting their own standards.

I am a huge Apple fan. But that doesn’t mean I’m blind to Apple’s flaws. I can’t comment about child labour, but I too wish that they would have a better distribution system, for all their products. iPods may have gone viral in all Indian stores, but just going to buy a Mac in any store here, be in Croma, iStore or imagine, is a very dismal experience. But they seem to be getting more interested in the Indian market (maybe they’ve realized that ignoring us is not in their best interests!) So I will give them credit where it is deserved.

U r really blind behind the apple…Have u heard the nokia’s term’s of license and all the stuff? Apple has even copied windows for popularirty of mac… i am fan of apple too but not that much that i won’t realize the truth..
Apple distribution sys is terrible in india and the launch date goes on postponding..
So we should realise the truth ourselves
