Garmin Enduro 4 GPS smartwatch and Approach S72 golf smartwatch announced

Garmin Enduro 4 and Approach S72

Garmin has announced two new smartwatches, the Enduro 4 and Approach S72. The Enduro 4 is a GPS smartwatch with solar charging and features for endurance training, extended battery life and navigation, while the Approach S72 adds golf tracking, swing metrics, green reading, putting analytics and health features.

Garmin Enduro 4

The Garmin Enduro 4 has an energy-efficient 1.4-inch MIP display with a solar lens and offers up to 320 hours of battery life in activity mode with solar charging, or up to 90 days in smartwatch mode. It includes more than 100 activity profiles and adds features for trail runners, multiday hikers, backpackers and endurance athletes.

The training and endurance features include:

  • Power modes: Garmin provides preset options to adjust battery life and performance based on the activity. Max Accuracy provides full-feature tracking for shorter efforts, while Max Battery supports activity recording for up to 320 hours with solar charging.
  • Grade-adjusted pace-based workout targets: Help maintain the appropriate effort range on hilly terrain.
  • Grade-adjusted rolling pace: Provides a real-time view of pace across varying terrain.
  • Stamina zones: Show how stamina affects an activity.
  • Stamina curve: Shows how endurance changes over time based on fitness and training history.
  • Indoor rowing: Provides VO2 max and power curve data.
  • Rucking: Allows users to adjust pack weight during an activity and set target metrics such as calories burned.

Garmin Enduro 4 Smartwatch

Garmin says the Enduro 4 has 50% more RAM than the Enduro 3 and a more powerful, updated map engine. The company says this enables 30% faster panning and a smoother interface for built-in routable maps, while Perspective view provides more detail at closer and farther viewing distances to help users anticipate the route ahead.

Garmin Epic lets users combine multiple activities into one story in Garmin Connect. Activities can be grouped across days, weeks or months to create an Epic, with options to add photos, share them with family and friends, and view health and performance data aggregated for that period.

The Enduro 4 also includes the following hardware features:

  • Build: 66 grams, with a 51mm case, titanium bezel and lightweight fiber-reinforced polymer case.
  • Lens: Power Sapphire scratch-resistant lens.
  • Flashlight: Integrated LED flashlight with white and red light options.
  • Water resistance: 10 ATM.
  • Band: New ComfortFit Fabric Band with moisture-wicking performance and QuickFit functionality.
  • Memory: 64GB for onboard maps, music and data.

Garmin Approach S72

The Garmin Approach S72 is available in 43mm and 47mm sizes with bright AMOLED displays. It features a new lightweight ComfortFit fabric band, titanium bezel and sapphire lens.

Golf features include:

  • Golf biometric data: Provides real-time heart rate and lets golfers review how their heart rate changes before and after each shot. After a completed round, they can also review heart-rate trends and how they may have impacted the score.
  • Swing metrics: Provides on-wrist data including hand speed, backswing length and wrist rotation.
  • Green reading: Uses green contour data on select courses to show the direction putts will break and the average slope percentage, helping golfers determine the aim point. An active Garmin Golf Membership is required.
  • Driving range activity: Tracks swing metrics and tendencies and logs driving range sessions in Garmin Connect so practice sessions can contribute to fitness goals.
  • Putting analytics: Provides speed bias, direction bias, make rate and other data in the Garmin Golf app following a round to help evaluate strengths and weaknesses on the green.
  • Aerial imagery: Provides real imagery of the hole, including information for evaluating where to lay up and the best place to miss.

Garmin Approach S72

The Approach S72 has a lightweight titanium bezel that will not hinder a golf swing, along with a sapphire lens for durability. It is Garmin’s first golf smartwatch with a speaker and microphone, allowing users to make and take phone calls and perform basic tasks through voice commands.

The built-in flashlight offers variable intensities of white light and a red light for finding equipment in a golf bag or illuminating a dark area. Battery life is rated at up to 20 hours on the course and up to 16 days when GPS is turned off.

Health and fitness features include:

  • Wrist-based heart rate
  • Stress tracking
  • Body Battery energy monitoring
  • Advanced sleep monitoring
  • Preloaded activity profiles for strength and mobility
