Smartphone designs have flatlined, with genuine innovation becoming a rare sight. Over two decades of covering tech, I’ve watched countless wild prototypes and flashy concepts vanish into thin air. When I checked out the HONOR Robot Phone at CES in January, I counted it as an ambitious prototype destined to stay in R&D for a long time. Almost no one in the industry expected it to reach the market this year. Fast forward to IFA 2026 in Berlin, and I am in genuine disbelief: the phone is alive, fully functional, and ready to shake up mobile hardware. It is unbelievable and refreshing to see genuine innovation. The HONOR Robot phone was a joy to use in the limited time I spent with it.
On the front, it looks like a regular Android smartphone and packs a 6.31 inch LTPO OLED display which can reach peak brightness of 6800 nits.
On the back is where the magic lies. HONOR has managed to pack a physical, motorized 4-DoF titanium gimbal imaging system featuring a 200MP main camera with 3-axis mechanical stabilization. The way the gimbal camera pops out is incredibly elegant and a treat to watch. The Robot phone will be a dream for content creators who shoot a lot of video on the go. I shoot a lot of my content on my iPhone and DJI Pocket 3, and honestly, the Robot phone makes my Pocket 3 feel nearly obsolete.
HONOR has also partnered with ARRI to bring cinematic image science and production workflows into consumer devices, and the first device to feature the tech is the Robot phone. ARRI is a renowned designer and manufacturer of professional camera technology for cinematic storytelling based in Germany. By integrating Hollywood-grade color pipelines like ARRI LogC3 and professional ARRI Looks directly into the smartphone’s hardware, creators can now capture mobile footage that matches the precise color-grading flexibility of industry-standard cinema cameras. This advanced imaging pipeline works in tandem with the device’s motorized 4-DoF Titanium Agile Gimbal, bringing genuine, studio-quality cinematic storytelling tools right into a consumer-ready form factor. From the limited time I spent capturing video on this device, it looks pretty impressive.
Additionally, there is a 200MP periscope telephoto camera and a 50MP ultrawide which are fixed to the back of the phone and do not move. My absolute favourite feature, however, is hands-free subject tracking using the motorized gimbal camera.
The included case is also very well thought out. It acts as a neat stand for the Robot phone when placed on a flat surface, and the metallic portion is completely detachable.
The device is not the slimmest given the machinery it packs, but it still is only 9.6mm thick. It weighs 248 grams, which is right around the same weight as the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
In terms of internals, it is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and sports a massive 7060 mAh Silicon-Carbon battery. It runs on MagicOS 10 which is based on Android 16. The software also features the AI assistant YOYO which is heavily customized for the China market and can analyze your surroundings, and dance to music etc. giving the Robot phone a completely unique bag of tricks.
It is bittersweet that this device is currently sold only in China, and I sincerely hope that HONOR releases a global version in the near future. The HONOR Robot phone is easily one of the coolest, most innovative products I have gotten my hands on this year.
