Airtel partners with Indian Army to extend mobile coverage across Arunachal Pradesh

Airtel has announced the successful completion of the first phase of a strategic initiative to enhance mobile connectivity across remote regions in Arunachal Pradesh. The project was executed in partnership with the 4 Corps of the Indian Army, which is headquartered in Tezpur.

With this deployment, Airtel has established mobile connectivity in several mountainous, high-altitude, and historically difficult-to-access sectors of the state. The infrastructure upgrade is designed to provide reliable voice and data services for both military personnel and local civilian populations residing in these remote border areas.

Infrastructure Deployment and Challenges

During the initial phase of the initiative, Airtel deployed network infrastructure across 30 Army stations situated in challenging terrain. Telecommunications expansion in these regions has historically been restricted by severe geographical and logistical constraints.

The project relied heavily on joint collaboration between the service provider and the Indian Army. To overcome the lack of conventional road access in multiple locations, the Indian Army provided logistical assistance, which included:

  • Transporting Airtel technical teams and specialized telecommunication equipment deep into mountainous zones.
  • Assisting with fiber-optic cable deployment.
  • Supporting the establishment of necessary power infrastructure.
Future Expansion: Phase 2

Following the completion of the first phase, Airtel and the Indian Army have agreed to initiate Phase 2 of the project. This next stage will extend the network infrastructure to 15 additional locations across Arunachal Pradesh, continuing the efforts to reduce connectivity gaps in the region’s most isolated environments.

Regarding this, Balaji R, CEO – North East and Assam, Bharti Airtel, said:

This initiative reflects Airtel’s continued commitment to extending connectivity to some of the country’s most difficult terrains. The rollout required extensive coordination between Airtel teams and local support units to overcome immense terrain and weather-related challenges.

Our teams operated under demanding high-altitude conditions and adverse weather to ensure timely and secure network activation. We are deeply grateful to the Indian Army for their unparalleled logistical support, which made it possible to bring digital connectivity to these frontier regions.
