Amazon integrates MX Player into Prime Video in India

Amazon has announced the integration of Amazon MX Player into Prime Video, consolidating its free and paid streaming services into a single destination for the Indian market.

Slated to roll out over the next few months, the unified platform will encompass Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD), Advertising Video on Demand (AVOD), Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD), and add-on subscriptions.

Background of the Merger

The integration follows Amazon’s 2024 acquisition of certain MX Player assets. These assets were merged with Amazon miniTV to establish Amazon MX Player, a service focused on utilizing ad tech innovation to provide a wide-reaching library of free, original entertainment.

Options for Viewers

The unification of the two services is designed to cater to varying consumer preferences, offering multiple tiers of access:

  • Prime Members: Subscribers will have access to a combined selection of original and exclusive content across devices, retaining the choice to watch either ad-free or with advertisements.
  • Free-Tier Users: Viewers seeking free entertainment will gain access to an expanded library of AVOD content. The platform will also feature integrated pathways for users to upgrade to a paid Prime subscription.
Device-Specific Rollout

The transition process will vary depending on the device and operating system:

  • Android App: The standalone Amazon MX Player app on Android will remain active but undergo a rebranding. It will continue to function as a local media player and offer free AVOD streaming. Additionally, the app will feature a dedicated Prime Video interface, providing users the option to subscribe and unlock the wider SVOD catalog. Amazon states that the pan-India distribution of the Android app remains central to the growth of both its AVOD offerings and subscription upgrades.
  • iOS, Living Room, and Web Apps: Users on iOS devices, smart TVs, and web browsers will be redirected entirely to the main Prime Video application. Once redirected, users will be able to access the combined content libraries, including free AVOD titles, directly through Prime Video.
Content Catalog and Advertising Impact

The consolidation merges two distinct content profiles into one catalog. Prime Video brings its established collection of premium global and local programming, including recognized franchise properties. Amazon MX Player contributes a diverse array of original series, reality shows, micro-dramas, and a substantial selection of international dubbed content.

Additionally, the integration is designed to streamline operations for advertisers. By bringing Amazon MX Player and Prime Video together under one brand, advertisers will have a centralized destination to reach audiences across both the free and paid streaming tiers.

Gaurav Gandhi, Vice President, Asia-Pacific and ANZ, Prime Video, said:

Our focus at Prime Video has always been to bring authentic stories that reflect the diversity of our audiences. With the integration of Amazon MX Player’s expansive original slate and audience scale, our collective offering is bigger and stronger than ever—making Prime Video the one-stop destination for quality entertainment, for every customer in the country.

Amazon MX Player has built remarkable engagement through a diverse library, and bringing it together with Prime Video’s iconic stories means we can keep serving our customers with the largest selection of exclusive and original content from India and around the world.
