Google has launched the Pixel Tag, its first finder tag for tracking items such as keys, wallets, and luggage. It uses Google’s Find Hub network to locate tagged belongings through Bluetooth when it is nearby and through a network of more than one billion Android devices when it is out of range.
The Pixel Tag has a thin stainless-steel design with polycarbonate and metal construction. It measures 46.1 x 28 x 5.4mm, weighs 11.8g, and features IP67 water and dust resistance, with protection against immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes. Its user-replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery lasts for over a year.
It has a built-in speaker and a button for finding the tag or a connected phone:
- The speaker can play a sound to locate the tag.
- The button can ring the connected phone, even when it is set to silent.
Setup requires an Android phone running Android 9 or later. After removing the battery tab, users can bring the tag close to the phone and pair it through Fast Pair. The Find Hub app lets users:
- Select an item category or enter a custom label.
- View the tagged item on a map.
- Share the Pixel Tag with up to 10 people.
For nearby items, Find Hub can make the tag play a sound when it is within Bluetooth range. Ultra-Wideband and Bluetooth Channel Sounding enable Precision Finding with metre-by-metre distance and directional guidance. Users can also enable Left Behind alerts for notifications when they leave tagged belongings behind.
When the Pixel Tag is out of Bluetooth range, Find Hub can use its network of more than one billion Android devices to locate it. Google says the network uses end-to-end encrypted location information without storing device location data. Android phones can also alert users when an unknown tag is detected travelling with them, along with instructions for ringing it and what to do next.
The Pixel Tag also works with other Pixel devices:
- Pixel Watch: Locate and ring the tag through the Find Hub app or browser.
- Pixel Buds: Ask Gemini to ring the tag.
- Wallets and keys: The slim profile fits into wallets and can be attached to items such as keys.
