Google Gemini desktop app for macOS released

Google has announced the launch of a native desktop application for its Gemini artificial intelligence on macOS. The application is designed to integrate directly into the desktop environment, allowing users to access AI assistance alongside their regular tasks without navigating away from their current workflow.

Key Features and Functionality

The new macOS application introduces several features aimed at streamlining user interaction with the Gemini AI:

  • Quick Access Shortcut: Users can summon the Gemini interface from any active screen using the keyboard shortcut Option + Space. This allows for immediate queries—such as verifying dates for a report or requesting spreadsheet formulas—without the need to switch windows or browser tabs.
  • Contextual Screen Sharing: The application allows users to share their current screen or specific local files directly with Gemini. This feature enables the AI to process visual context. For example, a user viewing a complex chart can share the window and request a summary of the primary takeaways directly based on what is displayed on the screen.
  • Integrated Creative Tools: The desktop app includes access to generative media tools. Users can prompt the creation of images using Nano Banana or generate videos using Veo directly from the desktop overlay.
Availability and System Requirements

The Gemini macOS application is available starting today, globally, at no cost to users.

  • Operating System: The application requires macOS version 15 and up.
  • Download: Users can download the software directly from gemini.google/mac.
Future Development

According to the announcement, this initial release is intended to serve as a foundational step. Google has indicated plans to expand the application’s capabilities in the coming months, with the stated goal of developing a more proactive and personalized desktop assistant.
