Garmin releases WhatsApp app for compatible smartwatches

Garmin has announced the launch of a new WhatsApp application for select smartwatches. The app, which is available for free through the Connect IQ Store, allows users to manage their communications directly from their wrists without needing to access their smartphones. Compatible device lines include select fēnix, Forerunner, Venu, and vívoactive models.

Key Features and Functionality

The new smartwatch application brings several core WhatsApp functions to the wearable interface. When using the app, Garmin device owners can:

  • View conversations: Access recent messages and active chat threads at a glance.
  • Read and reply: Respond to incoming messages using the smartwatch’s built-in keyboard.
  • Send reactions: Quickly reply using emojis and message reactions.
  • Review chat history: Scroll through up to 10 previous messages on the device screen.
  • Manage calls: View incoming WhatsApp calls and use the option to decline them directly from the watch.

Note: All personal messages and calls facilitated through the Garmin smartwatch app remain protected by WhatsApp’s standard end-to-end encryption, ensuring that content is only accessible to the sender and recipient.

Connect IQ Integration

Currently, WhatsApp is the first and only third-party messaging application officially available on Garmin smartwatches. The release was developed through Garmin’s developer program and the Connect IQ platform, which allows developers to build wearable applications using device sensors and features.

Users can download the WhatsApp integration now from the Connect IQ Store. The store serves as Garmin’s primary platform for device personalization, offering applications, watch faces, and media streaming services. It can be accessed via the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Commenting on the launch, Susan Lyman, Garmin Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, said:

Collaborating with WhatsApp underscores the strength and momentum of the Garmin Connect IQ ecosystem. By bringing a global messaging brand like WhatsApp to select Garmin smartwatches, we’re giving customers another meaningful way to stay connected—whether they’re training, exploring, or simply on the move.

Nikhil Joshi, Director of Product Management at Meta, said:

WhatsApp helps people stay connected no matter what platform they use. We’re proud to bring WhatsApp to Garmin smartwatches, so that more people can keep their private conversations going right from their wrist.
