Airtel first to bring mobile connectivity to remote Marwah region in Jammu & Kashmir

Bharti Airtel has expanded its mobile network coverage to Marwah, a geographically remote area situated between Kishtwar and Anantnag in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. With this deployment, Airtel has become the first telecommunications provider to establish mobile network connectivity in this challenging region.

Geographical Context and Prior Isolation

The Marwah region is characterized by its rugged mountainous terrain and limited infrastructure. Road access connecting Marwah to Kishtwar and Anantnag is seasonal. During the winter months, the area experiences heavy snowfall, leading to complete physical isolation from surrounding districts.

Historically, these geographical barriers have forced local residents to rely heavily on foot travel or mules for transporting essential supplies, commuting to work, and managing medical emergencies. Furthermore, the historical absence of telecommunications infrastructure left an approximately 150-kilometer corridor entirely without mobile network coverage.

Impact of the Network Expansion

The introduction of high-speed mobile connectivity is expected to have several practical implications for the region:

  • Local Residents: Provides a reliable means of communication for daily needs and emergency situations, which is particularly vital during the winter months when physical travel is highly restricted.
  • Security Forces: Facilitates communication and logistical coordination for personnel operating in or moving through this strategically significant corridor.
  • Tourism: Offers network access to visitors, which may support the local tourism industry by making travel to the destination safer and more convenient.
Broader Corporate Strategy

Airtel’s deployment in Marwah aligns with the company’s ongoing initiative to extend its network infrastructure into difficult-to-reach environments. The expansion aims to reduce regional connectivity gaps and support broader digital inclusion initiatives across India.

Commenting on this, Dibyendu Aich, COO – Jammu and Kashmir, Bharti Airtel, said:

We are proud to bridge the digital divide in Marwah, bringing high-speed mobile connectivity to a region long isolated by nature’s toughest barriers. Airtel’s relentless expansion into high-altitude and remote areas underscores our commitment to strengthening India’s digital backbone and ensuring every citizen, no matter how remote, stays connected.
