Sony WF-1000XM6 with enhanced noise cancellation announced

Sony has announced the latest addition to its 1000X series, the WF-1000XM6 truly wireless noise-cancelling earbuds. Succeeding the WF-1000XM5 that was introduced in 2023, the new model introduces hardware upgrades aimed at improving noise cancellation, audio fidelity, and call performance.

Noise Cancellation Improvements

According to Sony, the WF-1000XM6 achieves a 25% reduction in noise compared to its predecessor, with specific performance gains in the mid-to-high frequency range common in environments like cafés or public transport.

This performance is driven by a new hardware configuration. The earbuds utilize the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e alongside the Integrated Processor V2. The V2 processor features an Adaptive Noise Cancelling Optimiser that analyzes external sound and wearing conditions in real-time.

Hardware changes include an increase in microphone count from three to four per earbud. Sony has also updated the ear tips to “Noise Isolation Earbud Tips,” available in four sizes, designed to minimize sound leakage based on individual ear shapes.

Audio Architecture and Tuning

The audio system in the WF-1000XM6 has been re-engineered with a newly developed driver unit. The diaphragm features a hybrid design with a soft edge for bass response and a lightweight, rigid dome for high frequencies.

Signal processing has been upgraded to 32-bit (via the V2 processor), up from the 24-bit processing found in the previous model. The QN3e processor manages the DAC amplifier performance. The earbuds support Hi-Res Audio Wireless, DSEE Extreme, and 360 Reality Audio.

Sony notes that the sound profile was refined in collaboration with industry engineers, including Randy Merrill and Chris Gehringer, to ensure accuracy across various genres.

Design and Ergonomics

The physical design of the earbuds has been altered to improve fit and comfort. The body of the WF-1000XM6 is approximately 11% slimmer than the XM5, designed to reduce interference with the ear’s contours.

A significant structural change is the adoption of a new ventilation system. This is intended to increase airflow and reduce the “occlusion effect”—internal noises such as footsteps or chewing—that can occur with in-ear headphones.

The earbuds are available in two textured finishes: Black and Platinum Silver. The charging case has also been refined for easier one-handed opening.

Connectivity and Features

The WF-1000XM6 supports Bluetooth 5.3 and is ready for LE Audio (Low Energy), which offers lower latency suitable for gaming. Connection stability is supported by antennas that are 1.5 times larger than those in the previous model.

Key features include:

  • Call Quality: Utilizing two microphones and a bone conduction sensor per earbud, combined with AI beamforming to isolate speech in noisy environments.
  • Google Gemini: Native integration allows for hands-free assistance and conversational interaction via Gemini Live.
  • Battery Life: Rated for up to 8 hours of continuous playback (NC On) with an additional 16 hours provided by the case, totaling 24 hours. The case supports Qi wireless charging.
  • Durability: The units are rated IPX4 for water resistance.
