Microsoft has announced the official release of the Windows 11 2025 Update, designated as version 25H2. This annual feature update is focused on delivering enhanced security and a more streamlined operating system.
A Streamlined and Security-Focused Update
The update is being delivered as an “enablement package” for devices already running version 24H2. This means it activates features previously downloaded to the system, resulting in a significantly faster and more efficient installation process.
A major focus of this release is security, incorporating advancements from the Microsoft Secure Future Initiative, including improved vulnerability detection and AI-assisted secure coding. In an effort to make the OS leaner, legacy tools such as PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC) have been removed.
How to Get the Update
The rollout begins today for users on version 24H2 who have opted to receive the latest updates as soon as they are available. The release is controlled and will gradually expand to more devices over the coming months. Microsoft may apply a “safeguard hold” to prevent installation on systems with known compatibility issues until they are resolved.
Information for Commercial and Education Customers
For commercial and education customers, version 25H2 is available through Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Key new features for these sectors include support for Wi-Fi 7 and the ability for IT administrators to remove select pre-installed Microsoft Store apps on Enterprise and Education devices using Microsoft Intune or Group Policy.
The release of version 25H2 resets the support lifecycle, providing 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions. It is important to note that certain features that were initially disabled by default in version 24H2 will be enabled by default in version 25H2.
Microsoft encourages all users to update to benefit from the latest features and critical security improvements. Information on the rollout status can be found on the Windows release health hub.
