Xiaomi has official confirmed the launch of Xiaomi 17 series smartphones in China later this September, skipping the Xiaomi 16 name. This is similar to the announcement of previous flagships, including the Xiaomi 15 series, which was introduced soon after the announcement of the Snapdragon flagship 8 Elite chip.
However, this time the company will introduce 3 flagships – Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro, and the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max with all the phones powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5.
Recent rumour revealed a 6.3″ 1.5K 120Hz OLED screen, 50MP main camera with OmniVision sensor, 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 50MP telephoto lens with a Samsung ISOCELL JN5 sensor, a 50MP camera, HyperOS 3 with Android 16, Ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, IP68 + IP69 ratings, and a 7000mAh battery with 100w wired and 50W wireless fast charging.
Regarding the new lineup, Xiaomi smartphone head Lu Weibing said that Xiaomi’s five-year premium strategy and marks a key shift in its digital lineup, with a generational upgrade across the entire lineup.
- The Xiaomi 17 will be the most powerful standard flagship ever, featuring a comprehensive upgrade without increasing price.
- The two Xiaomi 17 Pro models will offer significant advancements in core technology, continuing to push the boundaries of the ultra-high-end.
- The Xiaomi 17 Pro will be Xiaomi’s most sophisticated compact imaging flagship; the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max will be Xiaomi’s most powerful flagship in the industry.
Regarding this Xiaomi 17 series and the competition with Apple, Lu Weibing said:
Five years ago, we embarked on our premium strategy, learning from our greatest competitor and resolutely benchmarking against the iPhone. To this day, Apple continues to excel. The success of the iPhone 17 series is evident to everyone, but we remain confident, which is why we are directly competing with the iPhone in the same generation and at the same level.
This confidence stems from the solid progress we’ve made over the past five years. This is driven by a breakthrough in our understanding of the concept of “no shortcomings in high-end products, from leading specifications to prioritizing experience, and deeply integrating software and hardware.” Driven by this understanding, Xiaomi has made remarkable progress in its high-end smartphones.
More importantly, it stems from our continued technological advancements. Over the past five years, we’ve invested over 100 billion RMB in R&D, and we plan to increase this investment to 200 billion RMB over the next five years. This time, with the Mi 17 series, you’ll see a series of our latest achievements.Of course, it’s not just about the underlying technology; this time, we’re also bringing something new to the smartphones, which might otherwise leave you feeling a bit bored by the current crop of phones.
