iOS 19 could support iPhone-to-Android eSIM transfers

A recent report suggests that Apple’s iOS 19 may allow iPhone users to transfer their eSIMs to Android devices — a first for cross-platform switching. According to Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority, code found in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 update points to this new feature.

Rahman discovered hints inside Google’s SIM Manager app, which currently handles eSIM transfers between Android phones. The latest app version contains code suggesting iOS 19 will enable wireless eSIM transfers from iPhones to Android devices.

New ‘Transfer to Android’ Section in iOS 19

The report notes that iOS 19 may introduce a new “Transfer to Android” section under Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. This would add options for iPhone users to start a wireless eSIM transfer to Android.

There may also be an “Other Options” button allowing manual transfers. This process would likely involve scanning a QR code on the new Android device, similar to existing eSIM transfers between Android phones.

QR Code and Manual Transfer Details

The QR code method appears to act as a backup if the more seamless eSIM Quick Transfer fails. To complete the manual transfer, users may need to input a session ID and passcode on the Android device — details expected to be generated by the iPhone.

Additionally, the code suggests that if the wireless connection fails, it may be because the iPhone is not running iOS 19 or a later version.

Carrier Demands Likely Driving the Feature

Rahman explained that while eSIM transfers between Android phones or between iPhones have been possible for some time, cross-platform support was likely driven by carrier demands. These improvements aim to reduce the need for customers to contact carriers when switching devices.

Rahman also acknowledged skepticism about discovering iOS 19 clues inside a Google app, but said it makes sense, as Google would need to prepare its systems to handle such transfers if Apple is indeed adding this support.

What This Means for Users

If confirmed, this feature would mark a major shift, simplifying the process for iPhone users moving to Android. It’s still unclear if Android-to-iPhone eSIM transfers will also be supported, but more details are likely to surface at Apple’s upcoming developer event.
