WhatsApp is working on International UPI payments in India

WhatsApp is working on a new feature to enable international UPI payments in India, as shared by AssembleDebug on X (formerly Twitter). The app’s screenshot reveals a forthcoming addition to the UPI settings section, labeled ‘International payments.’

Upon selection, users will be prompted to activate international UPI payments and set a period, up to 3 months, for making transactions to businesses in specific countries.

Other apps like PhonePe and GPay already offer this feature, but WhatsApp’s inclusion will streamline international transactions within the app.

Since launching in-app UPI payments for Indian users in November 2020, supported by over 140 banks, WhatsApp has been continuously enhancing its functionality.

Recent updates include the ability to pin up to three messages in chats and search messages by date, aiming to enhance the user experience.

Availability

The international payment feature is in development and may be available to limited beta users. It’s not yet accessible to all users. More information regarding its release is anticipated closer to the launch date.
