Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung announced the third iteration of their very popular Galaxy Note series at IFA 2013 in BerlinSamsung Galaxy Note 3 while they announced the Samsung Galaxy S4 back in March. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is the successor of Galaxy Note 2 which was an exceptional device(it still is) while the Galaxy S4 takes over from Galaxy S3. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is a huge upgrade over the Galaxy Note 2, but only a minor update to the Galaxy S4. Only six months have passed between the two device launches. Lets check out how these devices perform against each other.

Design, Build Quality

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy S4 do not share the same look like their predecessors did. Samsung have tried something with the choice of materials with their Galaxy Note 3 as they have opted for a faux leather back that sets it apart from the otherwise plastic back of the other Galaxy devices. The whole of technology fraternity silently booed the design language of Samsung Galaxy S4 as it continued to follow an all plastic approach with a similar design language. But the hard work of Samsung should not be underrated as they have managed to fit a bigger display in a nearly same body size(comparing the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3). Samsung have done a similar thing with the Galaxy Note 3 as well as it comes in a similar sized body as its predecessor but with a bigger display and a better faux leather back.

When you compare the design of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4, they look like twins, but not identical twins. The design language followed is same, but the choice of materials and the shape are different. The Galaxy Note 3 looks more rectangular than the Galaxy S4 while the Galaxy S4 feels quite compact for a phone with a 5inch display.

In terms of dimensions, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is quite bigger than Galaxy S4 because of its huge 5.7inch display. Galaxy Note 3 is wider, taller, thicker and heavier than the Galaxy S4. Galaxy Note 3 weighs 168g while the Galaxy S4 weighs just around 130g.

The positioning of keys is similar in both the devices. On the right side, we have the power lock key.

On the bottom, we have an uncovered microUSB port and a microphone on both the phones. On the Galaxy Note 3, loud speaker and bigger microUSB 3.0 port are present at the bottom and it comes with a S-Pen stylus compartment.

On the top we have the 3.5mm jack, secondary microphone and IR blaster on both the phones.

On the front, above the display, we have the earpiece at the center and the ambient and proximity sensors, the 2MP front facing camera are at the right of the earpiece in both the phones. The notification LED is on the left side of the earpiece and on Galaxy S4, we have an extra light sensor which is not present in Galaxy Note 3.

The bezels on the both the phones are quite thin and that has greatly made it look sleek.

Below the display, we have the usual Samsung arrangement with a physical home button at the center and capacitive touch keys on either side.

Moving to the back, we find some drastic difference. The much talked about feature of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3’s design and build is seen here -it is a pretty good faux leather finish that gives it a great texture and prevents it from scratches and finger prints. The Galaxy S4 on the other hand has a regular Samsung glossy textured plastic finish that makes it a finger print magnet and prone to scratches. There is a 13MP camera with an LED flash below it on the both the devices.

Being Samsung devices, they come with a removable back cover. Opening the back cover, we see that both the phones have a microSIM card slot that is not hot-swapabble and a hot-swappable microSD card slot. On the Galaxy Note 3, the microSIM card slot and the microSD card slot are stacked one above the other.

Overall, in terms of build quality and design,Galaxy Note 3 looks like a clear choice, but when you bring in size as a factor, the scales are now pointing to the Galaxy S4. At the end, it is a matter of personal preference when it comes to the choice between a huge 5.7inch phone with a nice textured back or a 5inch compact phone with a glossy plastic back.

In terms of day to day performance, both the phones are quite snappy and there is hardly a moment you will notice any difference between the two.

In benchmarks, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 outdid the Galaxy S4 in all the benchmarks.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has seen a camera upgrade from the Galaxy Note 2 with a 13MP camera at the back and a 2MP camera at the front. Galaxy S4 too had the similar update from Galaxy S3 and now has the same combination with 13MP camera at the back and 2MP snapper at the front. Both the phones are capable of recording 1080p videos from the rear camera and front cameras. However, only Galaxy Note 3 can record 1080p videos at 60fps. The international variant(Exynos version) misses out on 4K video recording which is there in the LTE variant(Snapdragon 800).
