Instagram starts rolling out two factor authentication

Instagram is the latest app that is bringing two factor authentication (2FA) to its platform. The move comes from the Facebook owned popular photo sharing app in a bid to beef up security for its over 400 million users.

The 2FA is coming to the desktop website as well as mobile applications. With the 2FA, Instagram will now let you verify your phone number with an account. The security update adds another step in your login process as now whenever a user logins to his account on a new device, it will send an authentication code on the user’s registered phone number. After entering the code, you will get to access the account. This security tool is optional and can be turned off from settings. Prior to this, logging into Instagram only required a user ID and password.

The latest 2FA feature comes to Instagram only days after Instagram added support for multiple accounts. Other major tech companies like Facebook, Google and Twitter already offer 2FA feature to its users.
